The violence is exploding now....

The level of hate is off the charts. This could have been Trump last year, by a few centimeters

Today they actually seated the jury for the second attempt.....
reply
I'm going to wait for more news before saying more, but I'll say this: whatever the shooter was hoping to accomplish, you just magnified Charlie Kirk's message 100 fold because he's either gonna die a martyr or live to be a hero

100% agree and I hope I'm wrong. The whole jury thing was something I was reading earlier before this happened
reply
Indeed. This action has the opposite effect almost every time.

My understanding from various gossip is that the only defensible tightening of arms control legislations that could get argued into various branches of the Uncle is about beginning to consider rifles1 similarly dangerous to, I dunno, what has the typically medialiterate American heard of these days? Ricin?

Footnotes

  1. Hunting rifles for long-distance single-ball targeting, as opposed to sidearms.

Guaranteed, wetwork op.
The fact this is being framed as some unhinged rando, and people are taking that at face value, is absolutely maddening. Zero situational awareness.
reply
I don't agree with Kirk but the stuff people say about him and how triggered they are by him is insane. We live is sick times.
reply
It almost seems like the people that hate Trump are trying to create the situation where a strong man will be given the powers they claim Trump wants. Its kinda wild. People are so bought into one side or the other that they apparently can't see this.
reply
Some morons on the right are even suggesting that any trans person should not be PERMITTED to own a gun. The vary logic that has been used on the right for decades and they have opposed. You couldn't write a better script for building a totalitarian movement walking ahead with the left and the right feet taking us further and further away from freedom and prosperity.

Have heard that suggestion; it’s incoherent

There are many on all sides that have bad ideas. I hope this one goes no where.

It increasingly seems like we are beset by evil forces that simply desires death and destruction for its own sake.
reply
Sure seems that way. But I am reminded that this is still very rare. Most people are not violent. I pray that we will see that escalation is not the answer.
reply
As a Republican there are some things I agree with and others I think he's just wrong. Peoples inability to be wrong and crash out over not being right is a huge issue. Charlie always came prepared to debates and had articles, paper, data, etc. backing him up. He didn't just sprout random stuff that came to mind
reply
Even though I did not agree with Kirk on many things, and I even found his attitude smarmy and a bit condescending, he at least came with ready arguments. It's not his fault that his opponents weren't equally prepared.
That being said, arguing against college students is like dunking on schoolchildren.
But whatever you think of Kirk, nothing justifies killing him... FFS!
reply
Yep, well said

What always shocks me is how quickly pretty common positions become extreme.
reply
I used to work at the UVU library
reply
are you from utah? how does this incident make you feel given your connection to the university?
reply
no not from there. a buddy of mine is taking classes there, and was on campus today
i feel awful about it, i mean i'm frightened and upset, and it feels majorly wrong
reply
wow, that must be even more awful, to be on campus for an event like this... damn.

Time for gun control USA?

I don't think that would have made a difference here. This seems like a professional job, or a foreign state trying to harm the US. -Tom

I saw the video on twitter. It was absolutely sickening. I am not a doctor and I hope he survives but it didn't look survivable.
reply
We are living in a war zone and pretending it is something else other than that. People are shocked into momentary awareness, then fall back asleep. The war isn't going to stop because people fall asleep.
reply
To me this is an even bigger shock than Trump assassination attempt
  1. It actually worked
  2. He was 31
  3. He wasn't even a politician. Just some influencer with a podcast and YT channel and who liked to argue with college kids. We at the point of assassinating influencers now? That feels like something that would happen in Iran or something.
reply
And nothing on a suspect yet, or where the shots came from. I feel like we had some info by this time during the Butler attempt.
reply
Butler had much higher security, since it was a presidential candidate. IIRC the shooter was actually killed at the scene by a sniper.
Dude today was just an influencer on a college campus. You shouldn't f***Ing need snipers, or even any security at all, in sane times. But we don't live in sane times.
reply
Yeah, that's been going on for around 8 years or so in earnest--and really far before that. There are many Aaron Swartz's out there.
reply
Amen! Amen! I do what I can do after losing everything to these unhinged demons. I fight spiritually, I use what I have. Prayer, incense salt. Leave leaflets around about Yahshuah (Jesus) and his love. If you pray for your enemies it seems to be a mighty big sword.

I think people don’t know what to do. Do you?
reply
Situational awareness is a good first step. Before a thing happens, there are usually multiple kinds of events signaling there could be trouble. Notice those signs, and act accordingly.

Situational awareness dies of highway hypnosis.
reply
My thoughts exactly. We live in a fucked up world.
reply
This is the third assassination in the US this year that comes to mind (the insurance guy and the politician in MN who was killed). I don't remember any in the years prior. Yes, there were assorted attempts, but this feels very different.
reply
And another school shooting about an hour after Kirk.
reply
Escalation very much feels in the air. Even how (some) people were actually celebrating Luigi Mangione (sp?) just felt.... off. Like it shouldn't be like this.
reply
Yes! We have to battle to keep our values at the center of our hearts and minds. For me that is the words of Jesus. We are tempted to take the worst of the sides that are screaming and only take the best of our side. Its not helpful. Jesus taught that we should love our enemies. The social media space is showing us over and over again how dark the hearts can be. Kinda wild to see what people are posting. Its not winning people over to their side. Its clearly hate. Hate will not stop hate. We must resist that temptation and pray for the love of Jesus.
I've been concerned about stuff like this for a long time. I feel sick thinking about it. The enemy is at work spreading hatred and divisions. I do think the answer is Jesus and that the church has to show a better way and be better than we have been in doing so.

this is one of the least obviously interpretable bar charts I've encountered. there's definitely lots of information, and the bars are labelled by specific incidents, however there isn't any title or caption for the entire thing, and it seems to be two related plots placed together.
I recognise the names of the more famous politicans so I'm guessing it focuses on shooting incidents against politicians. Do you have any source link that includes the author's interpretation for the data?
My best guess is "Politically-Motivated Shootings"; it's also a little problematic because the number of deaths probably includes people who might not have been the primary target of a politically-motivated shooter. In general I don't like this kind of data presentation because although it does show some statistic about the cohort in question [violent fringes], it doesn't tell you much about how that cohort fits in to the larger population.

Utah Speaker of the House Mike Schultz has confirmed Charlie Kirk has died.
reply
Didn't he have kids? They lost their father because college kids don't know how to debate... (pretty sure that's all Charlie Kirk was really known for, debating college students)
reply
Yes he had two and a wife..... He also had people from all over the political spectrum on his podcast. Gavin Newsoms first podcast ever was with Kirk.
reply
I still remember an incident, many years ago, when a conservative influencer was sucker punched on live camera, and the left was cheering it as "punch a nazi"... I forgot who it was at the time...
increasingly it seems like they are choosing to not fight with words but with violence

reply
He was actually an open white supremacist and not some conservative branded that way. That was Richard Spencer
reply
I remember that as well. The irony of opposing a political movement because of its hate and lack of civility and then doing exactly what you accuse them of is mind blowing. But, its not new. Its been the case for most of my life.
reply
I don't remember it ever being to this level in my lifetime. (but it's possible i wasn't paying enough attention)
reply
I am not saying its not worse. I think it is.
