I am sure there were many ordinary people who were just trying to get on with their lives.
But I also wonder how many "ordinary" people there were that, while not part of the regime, still approved of their atrocities.
The amount of people who are approving of Charlie Kirk's murder makes me wonder how many otherwise normal seeming people harbor a condonation of violence in their hearts.
I’m pretty confident that it’s normal to only have empathy for one’s in-group and to celebrate harms suffered by perceived enemies.

Perhaps, but I think what's abnormal is how large you draw that circle of perceived enemies is, and how much atrocity you would tolerate being done to them.
I'm not trying to sound morally superior or anything, but when Osama Bin Laden was killed and people in New York were celebrating in the streets, I genuinely felt uncomfortable. To me, a man's life was taken. Yes, he probably deserved to be killed, but to me it's a somber moment, not a celebratory one.
Maybe i'm too influenced by Chapter 1 of A Game of Thrones, where Ned Stark executes a criminal, and teaches his son why it's necessary but not something to be enjoyed.

I thought you were about to reference scripture.
I felt the same way, but maybe I would have felt differently if they had gotten him much faster.

The main narratives are seldom told by those who advance the main narratives. The Great Depression and first World War seemed to be engineered to bring about the poor conditions you describe so someone like Hitler could get into a position of power.
Charlie Kirk, in my opinion, is a casualty of people not being willing to listen to facts beyond their talking points. Free speech is a big one, and Mr. Kirk had to pay the price it actually costs in his own blood. If we want to have some different experience, we need to fix and address the problems we have where a public speaker appears to need an entire security detail complete with their own snipers in order to be possibly safe enough to speak.
