its purpose is to model what will get mined.
Yeah, this is ridiculously wrong, and gmax should know better. One of the purposes of the mempool was so that nodes could build transactions, that stopped being correct more than a decade ago. Another purpose is to relay transactions, that's the whole "censorship resistant" part. Relaying transactions that are harmful for the network has never been a goal, until the core pivot.
That somebody somewhere somewhen added a fee estimation feature is irrelevant to bitcoin the network, at best it's useful for some people who don't understand fee estimation and RBF. That's when you need to "model" what will get mined.
it was always about fee estimation, it's just fee estimation is hard and wasn't prioritized to the same extent till recently.
RBF only works if you have some way to estimate to begin with.
WHY do you want to relay transactions? (any transaction) think about it.

So bitcoin didn't relay transactions before 2015 when fee estimation was added? https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/v0.10.0/doc/release-notes.md#transaction-fee-changes
And only computer scientists without any experience in the real economy think it's a problem they can solve (they can't)

so again WHY do you want to relay transactions?
what problem are you trying to solve?

where is the why?
because they are beneficial to the network? how do you know they are beneficial?
