Even though research studies have shown that the indiscriminate use of ChatGPT has led to the deterioration of thinking skills among frequent users, I feel compelled to give it a go because my entire department has embarked on this AI endeavour. I didn’t want to stick out like a sore thumb by not conforming to my new workplace culture.
If the filter debate teaches us one thing, it is that you cannot filter, or unfilter, on behalf of the ultimate beneficiary of your tooling (your students in this case.) Is there a way to discuss the pros and cons, observations and outcomes, with your students?
Thanks for your critical question.
My knee jerk reaction is not yet. Remember how I got into trouble the other time? That’s because they were so disengaged and unwilling to do their homework that I blew my top at them. Haha. Just today, I let them play a game (boys vs girls) and winced as I witnessed my lesson getting disintegrated. (People just talking to each other, not caring about their classmates’ involvement.)
Having said that, I know never say never. I will let your question simmer in my mind and see how things go!

It's very hard to deal with potentially disruptive uncertainties if you're in a leading / trusted role and with students it must be even harder. I seem to remember that in your early years, your brain gets formed the most, right? So it's extremely impactful.
How does the workplace go about this? Are there any other skeptics?

Indeed, the prefrontal cortex only finishes developing when we are in our early 20s.
Fraternity-wise, there are educators from other schools who highlight to their charges the need to be discerning in regard to AI usage. Hallucinations n responses too formulaic for a particular writing purposes. So there are people out there who don’t just ride on the trend.
If you ask me about my colleagues, I’m not that close to them yet haha. But I get the sense that everyone is just eager to tick this off their to-do list. One of the challenges of teaching is the multifaceted nature which leads to little headspace.
I will force my students to come up with a storyline first before they get to use TeacherGaia. At least they put in some brainpower first!
Thanks for holding me accountable ☺️
