I recently had a dinner with some friends that are pretty switched on technically... and realised NONE of them are running any network filtering for their your kids at home 🤯
Just wondering ...how many parents have network filtering setup?
Yes 💯62.5%

My kids are still pretty young (oldest is 10), so device use is mostly supervised.
I'm torn on filtering as they get older though. I'm not sure how much better off they are by not being allowed to do something (because of a router setting) as opposed to not being allowed to do something because we say they can't/shouldn't do it.
We have firearms I'm the house. They know how to access them. They know they aren't supposed to, and I am pretty confident they won't.

I grew up knowing where the guns of my father were and how to access them and the ammunition. Nothing ever happened as we brothers were very responsible good kids.
Retrospectively, I think it was highly irresponsible by my father not to hide the keys to gun safe better. This could have gone the wrong way.
(And just for the record, I like guns & shooting. Was in the army and have hunting license. Biggest gun shot: Leopard 2 Combat Tank).

I am blocking only on DNS level. I am running unbound on my opnsense router and blocking based on adguard and steven black list. I am using that for all networks for home so not only for kids.

I have basic DNS filtering set up at home, but I quickly realized that with three teenagers, they can easily bypass any restrictions. I’ve always refused to install surveillance tools, as that would be completely inconsistent with the values I stand for every day. That said, my wife and I spend a lot of time discussing privacy, security, and propaganda with our kids. They know we trust them by default—but also that there would be consequences if they were to break that trust.

I used to be surprised how few parents that are savy enough but don't do anything. It's wild.
We have run our own DNS for a very long time. My sons are "adults" now and I still run it. I would run it with no kids. Blocks ads, and many malicious domains. It's no substitute to open dialog and teaching by example but it should be belt and suspenders. Bare minimum

Totally agree 👍

stackers have outlawed this. turn on wild west mode in your /settings to see outlawed content.
What kind of filtering? DNS-level denylist?
reply
Yeah it has to be from the router down imo - device based alone doesn't cut it

What if the devices have a cellular connection? Perhaps both are needed

I would assume. That's the most common approach.
