I think for a certain subset of people, that is part of it. But I'm not sure how well it aligns with religiosity versus statism/libertarianism.

I think in the modern West, there is a strong but misguided belief in the technical competence of experts, especially among socioeconomic elites. This misguided belief probably has its roots in their college education, which requires more parroting beliefs than thinking critically.
