Make songs longer = listen to jazz music.

reply
Welcome. Why do you want to make songs longer?
reply
Short songs are fiat, longer songs = longer attention spans, low time preference, and greater art IMHO

I prefer longer songs too. A song should be like a story and have adequate development and resolution. I think the right length is song dependent though. Some longer songs just drone on and on.
reply
The BEST songs are long and have three parts, like Y Can't Tori Read's "Etienne" or Yungblud's "Hello Heaven, Hello." Legendary. Zeppelin songs. 🔥
reply
Could you tell a bit of your story, like, how you ended up where you are now?
reply
Well, I'm old 😉 I've had 10 careers by now. I always tend to seek adventure, from working in radio/TV to social work in the addiction field, I ended up here because I was in tech marketing after TV and got really into startup world at the same time I was learning Bitcoin. Then Nostr came along and I really found my tribe in Nostr PHX. We did an event in Feb 2024 with Sara Jade that really activated my V4V gene. It all kinda came together in my brain 🧠 having worked in radio for so long and having seen the dysfunction of the radio and records industry, it all clicked for me. I watched Sara rock Sam Means' warehouse for 30 minutes with her original songs and earn $750 in Bitcoin and I was sold. I became a V4V disciple, spreading the good word of Bitcoin and Nostr.
reply
What is the PERFECT song length? And why??
reply
Songs should be at least 5:00, which still appears to be a lot to ask for. There are short songs that I think are perfect. But we need to change our time preference and music is so universal, this is one way we can learn to work towards a long game, fix our attention spans, and calibrate ourselves to fixing the money and the world.

when did you get into bitcoin and why?
reply
I farted around with it in 2018 and 2019 knowing nothing. I was working in TV in 2020 during the pandemelection and that did it. I was looking for the escape hatch, questioning everything and that was it. I was a TV producer and had a front row seat to the world being on fire and I'd had it. I dove into my geneaology and Bitcoin pretty hard. 2020 forged me in the fire as a Bitcoiner.

GM Heather! Fanfares.io will be adding support for zapwalled music in the coming months. Creators will be able to set a price in sats and sell up to lossless quality DRM-free music to their fans. I want to know your opinion on a few things:
  1. What do you think the V4V community will think about VB4V and this new tool at creators' fingertips?
  2. What music player/store/library features would you like to have in the Fanfares PWA? We can look at adding these into our UI
Thanks!

vb4v != v4v I'm glad to see that you're making the distinction. True v4v sets zero limits on value https://value4value.info/
reply
right on. Just FYI, the zapwall price set by the creator is a minimum payment; you can zap as much as you want.
reply
0 sats \ 2 replies \ @anon 22h
Can that be zero?
reply
If you want to give away something for free on Fanfares, you can upload it as the Preview track which is always free. But the minimum price is always 1 sat for the Secret content.
reply
or maybe 1 sat so it's something?

This is great! 😊 I need to come up with something zap worthy to post...

Agreed, That's why I'm glad that there's a distinction being made. In the past people have been calling this vb4v trend v4v. I'm all for people innovating and making cool things, I'm also for defining things properly
reply
I'm an advocate for getting rid of V4V, vb4v, etc. This is jargon to me, and I don't think it's going to help us grow this community. I'm an advocate for communicating it all in plain language. I think once it grows to a certain extent, the fans will create something like a hashtag or phrase for it. I hope to see that. I really want to leave it up to the musicians and fans. Or maybe something else comes along to push the idea, like films. who knows? I love what Avi Burra is doing with IndeeHub, for example. Music is just so universal, it seems like it's the most likely place for this idea to take off.
I don't think there is one "proper" way to do this. I think when we focus on that, we are focused on the wrong thing, indoctrination, which isn't fun or attractive to new folks who want to come into the space.
I think we need to be more open and welcoming, which is not something we've done a good job at. Part of that is going to be making it easier to understand so people will adopt it. Part of it is just being nice to newcomers, rather than browbeating them that there is only "one" "proper" way things should be done. I certainly don't want to squelch new energy or ideas coming in.

Hi Arkinox! Can't wait to see you IRL again this weekend at Nostr Valley! 🔥
OMG I WANT more tools like this! There are parts of the V4V community that may be insular and not like it, but that's silly if that happens. Quality is worth paying for and ensuring artists get paid for their work is vital to this ecosystem we're all creating. It may have to start out with low-sat prices, but we can see what folks are willing to pay. In the long-game, it won't matter because I see this growing (someday) to where prices can be low due to many fans... We're not there yet 😉 We've got a ways to go, but we're building these rails and you guys have done a good job! I gotta spend some time on Fanfares this week!
I think playlists are vital because I'm a sucker for playlists 💕

What are all the V4V artist friends I need to bring on my podcast to show love? (as of now I've featured Joe Martin, Ainsley Costello, and Kathryn)
I'm sure you know a TON, so to make things interesting, I will zap you 50 sats for every person you recommend with a link to their profile 🎶⚡️⚡️⚡️

ALL of them! I think what we need to do is discover talent like the old A&R folks did decades ago. Let's find and "break" some new music in the community. If we don't do it, who will? Old school, grassroots A&R died with the music industry's slow death. We can revive this online with Nostr, Wavlake, and Fountain.
More folks need to know about Man Like Kweks and what he's doing in Tanzania to teach about Bitcoin adoption with Bitcoin Arusha. Has anyone interview My Friend Jimi of Australia yet? He's great!
We should start a Nostr thread on this 😂 this will take me all day

Lately it seems it's getting folks to spend their Bitcoin. We've had years of HODLing culture. it's time to spend some sats on the world we want to see.
We will be at Nostr Valley in State College, PA this Saturday, 10/18 to take the Nostr roadshow for a spin around Penn State. We'll stream live to Nostr and hope for a good turnout—the area will be packed for parents weekend. We may have a good opportunity here to hand out some purple pills to a whole new crowd that's never seen this kind of craziness before. That's me being bullish though. It's hard to purple pill a cold crowd, which is what I expect it to be.
We've got a warm crowd coming up in Nashville on the 25th. These are bitcoiners because we'll be at Bitcoin Park. I want to see folks zapping Ainsley Costello and Joe Martin as they perform. I'm talking about in-person zappers and those watching online on Zap.Stream, Nostur, Primal, and—my personal favorite—Tunestr.io. We need Bitcoiners to participate more, both in person and online. We need folks to spend their bitcoin rather than HODL when it comes to pushing culture and creating this world we want to see. We need them right now to lead the way. These are the alleged smarted people on the planet because they found bitcoin first. I want to see them 'get it' when it comes to music and V4V.
I'm asking for the Bitcoin community to show up and show out. I didn't see this in Vegas in May. I want to see this now.
Bitcoiners need to participate. Be fans. Watch the shows online because you CAN. Zap artists because you CAN. Come out to Nostr Valley this weekend and Bitcoin park in Nashville next weekend. This is the bitcoin lifestyle y'all always wanted, right? It's culture, community, and a circular economy.
That's the first step. You can have a Bitcoin musical lifestyle. Watch us from Nostr Valley from anywhere in the world. Come out to enjoy live entertainment at Bitcoin Park! It won't just be music. It will be fellowship with like minds. We'll have The Bitcoin Painter out there making art LIVE. Shawn Yaeger will will grace us with a fireside chat. 🔥 and expect there to be a little AI building demo on Shakespeare with Derek and I involved... You guys wanna see us do the real nerd snipe IRL? We got you!
Nothing is cooler than meeting your fellow bitcoiners and Nostriches IRL while contributing to our open source ecosystem. Music, food, drinks, AI nerds, galaxy brains like Shawn... It's gonna be a great time! Can't wait to see you out there!

Haha! We have so many... Miners are undefeated. I can't say QW because that's showing favoritism. 😂 We've got some in the Rigly Telegram group who have made some good ones. We need a good zapathon on Nostr to help the memelord cream rise to the top... ⚡️

We already have lots of debates about v4v and marketing (see #803129) and I'm currently inviting artists to join Wavlake/Fountain and embrace value-for-value (see #1061738) but they keep me asking the how do I promote the v4v? which...honestly? Marketing for v4v...I don't know how to put it, some words about it would be helpful
reply
Fantastic question!
We gotta market it by doing it. We must make this look fun and cool and I don't think we've done a good job of that yet. There are still so few of us doing this, I want MOAR folks to join. I want more younger folks in this, bring me an army of cool Gen Z folks.
V4V is a clunky term. I think there are still too many things to explain and I'm trying to pepper my phrasing with more descriptive, everyday language rather than jargon. We aren't gonna get where we want to be with hashtags. If we get jargon-y, we're only speaking to our bubble and we need to break the purple wall.
We have to market it by showing its successes, that this is FUN (because it is) and that it's for everyone. This is a great equalizer to come along after DECADES of media consolidation (thanks 1996 Bill Clinton 🙄 ). The centralization is so baked in, most folks are unaware of it.
We have to be able to explain things simply in plain language so V4V can appeal to anyone. I think we lose people when we throw in "the B Word" and too much tech speak about wallets, zaps, and boost. We just have to show it works and be good stewards of the tech, which will mean being a little less tech-y and more palatable to the masses. This isn't yet for the masses, but we do need enough folks to get into it for it to grow.

what's your favorite all time artist and how do we get them on nostr?
reply
Oh man... that's like picking a favorite child. I am a sucker for singer songwriters like Tori Amos. She's too big to have a "need" for what we offer with Nostr and V4V. I want to see more musicians in general, the indie ones who need Nostr, V4V, and Bitcoin. Quite a few folks want to see big names get on Nostr, which I do hope for, but we will win when there's a healthy grassroots indie community thriving on Nostr. This is totally possible. Each one reach one. 🔥
reply
What are your thoughts on the new live-streaming trend on Nostr? I saw there are some radio shows already popping up - looks super cool, I just haven't been able to go listen to them yet
reply
I love it and want more of it. You can just open up Primal and see what's happening now. Could be someone on the 1s & 2s, could be ODELL and Marty, who knows? May be my bro QW and Avi doing PCR... I like that we never know what's on! I'm sure we could also use some kind of schedule posted somewhere, too.
I want way more folks doing this. I want more V4V podcasters. Getting the music online to discover is one thing. We need some curators to spend the time finding and curating it for the fans. This will help create more fans. it's a flywheel and we gotta get it spinning faster. Right now, the V4V hamster is asleep. Time to poke him and get more participation.

What is the origin of 'make songs longer'?
reply
I was shitposting on Nostr as one does. It was back whenever we realized we could post a little status that would stick. I used mine to get on my Soapbox that songs should be longer. So I did an ALL CAPS ODELL style "MAKE SONGS LONGER" on mine. Because short songs are so fiat, songs should be longer. Kinda like how Saifedean talks about art and architecture worsening under fiat...songs have gotten shorter since 1971. Understanding low time preference is kinda important around here. Everything we do is a long game.

Hey, Nostr Dad is Fiatjaf! lol! Derek, however, is CEO of Nostr! Kidding. Soapbox Sessions is going well and we're having a great time rounding up Nostr news, AI news, and talking about ALL the Nostr gossip. We do mention Fiatjaf sometimes, and say GM to him just to get his goat. Everyone say GM to Fiatjaf today!
