I realized I actually do not translate English sentences into German in my head to understand them; I just understand them in English and accept them as they are.
It's very hard to translate literally between 2 languages that you learned and mastered organically 1, so I think that it's good that they let you - and her too - pass and not fixate on technicality (very un-German though haha.)
Question: dt. or OV? I've felt for a longer time, especially before the mass internet, that the exposure to spoken English on TV has a large influence on proficiency later on. With the mass internet, this exposure has grown.

Footnotes

  1. I have the same with German though, which I definitely don't master (I'm in big trouble when I get asked something random on the street) but organically learned besides 3 years of a teacher going on and on about "Kasus" and basically making sure no one wants to learn it lol. The hardest part to me is to have a thought in English and then speak it in German, it's generally where I break down. When I just have a conversation in German it's ok-ish, though everyone knows from the moment that I open my mouth that I'm not proficient.

Always OV with English subtitles as backup because I struggle a bit with hearing.

Every time I search for something online, I do so in English because I know I will get more and better results.

I tried doing the dubbed movies to strengthen my German language but the voice acting is very disturbing if you know what the actor actually sounds like - maybe genAI can fix this, lol. I do watch my football on German channels when I can and the news in German when I'm there, I figure that this does help a bit, but probably not enough. Old dog, new tricks.

I embraced the internet back when it was a novelty and there wasn't much content outside of English anyway, so I only search off-English when I specifically need local content.
