In my quest to completely de-google my life, I’m at the point where I’m ready to close my gmail account. I began using protonmail as a second email account a few years back, but it took time and effort to extricate myself from the google ecosystem. As of two days ago I have made it my prime email account.

I know protonmail isn’t perfect. The author of this article really does a deep dive, and reveals some serious drawbacks.

Until the day comes when the lightning network renders email obsolete, I need to compromise.

I’m curious to know what email providers SN members use?

For private stuff - My own domain, my own hosting. My rules, my server, my email. For public spam shit - protonmail. No google or other shit. People MUST learn the difference between PRIVATE and PUBLIC.

I wrote an article about this: https://darthcoin.substack.com/p/avoid-being-spammed

Become a paying ProtonMail user, get VPN, Drive and Calendar all encrypted. Pair this with using SimpleLogin-aliases. For paying Proton users, an SL-mail account is included, and you can simply go in to that service using ProtonMail login.

Using aliases like this "stacker.xqk37@slmail.me" and the receiver of your emails won't even know what email service provider you are using. + If you start getting spam, you know who leaked it, and you can just turn off that alias.

Protonmail here. I've pared down my use of centralised services now to about 4 or 5 maybe, and those are on the chopping block too. At some point only banks, kraken and things like DNS registries will be in my emails.

Email is so ancient, literally nearly 50 years old, but until there is an as universally used decentralised long form private messaging system it's gonna hang around like a bad smell.

BTW, it mentions "authoritarian governments" blocking access to protonmail. That list includes the Irish government!

protonmail and kraken here too. It's been working flawless for the last year or two.

Proton is great. It is better than gmail. Once people make the mental shift to migrate off of gmail then they can start thinking about the next steps, but got to take things one step at a time.

Protonmail. Interesting, I didn't realize they don't encrypt subject lines - good to know.

protonmail is way overrated in my opinion. and i heard it got sold to some sktechy Israeli company involved in the intelligence industry. (maybe someone else has more info on that) i used to use it but switched to fastmail after learning about it on hacker news. never looled back.

reply

all the telegram scammers seem to use protonmail in their scamposts, i've always personally found it to be a little bit of a red flag due to this

reply

It does have that reputation. That's why I'm running my own domain through protonmail now. You get the security benefits without the stigma.

I use gmail but I’d like to switch to proton or host my own

own domain, own server.

most important feature of your own domain is that you can use a catchall address and give every merchant / website its own emailaddress to send mails to you.

So if they spam you or sell your email address, you just forward that one address to NIL and dont have to deal with spam.

I just checked out your web site. I like your native lightning payment node for each user. I've noticed when exploring email options that there is a trend towards marketing to individual users self hosted email cloud solutions. I see benefits and drawbacks to that model.

My recommendation is for Proton with your own domain. Its drawbacks are pretty minimal, and now it has a mobile calendar app and a VPN + email alias tool (SimpleLogin) bundled with it, too. A much better solution than gmail anyway.
