Apple has done nothing but fumble the huge AI pivot that tech has undergone the last couple of years. They seemed to have treated it like a fad only to have it blow up on them. Gemini is an interesting pick just due to the two competing companies fighting each other.

Apple may just not end up as an AI company. They can just pay the winner for the service and avoid the upfront investment.
The real story is Open AI getting left out in the cold. With Gemini being native on every phone, GPT is going to struggle.
Yes and no because OpenAI is partnering with Disney for instance and so that locks up a massive market. Plus business wise OpenAI in that area much much more. For Congress OpenAI is currently the only AI service we can use because others like Gemini wanted access to the House data which was a huge no go.
That seems like a small customer base compared to everyone with a phone. I suppose we will see how it goes, it's going to be an interesting few years coming up.
Its not that small when you factor in all these employees that are going to be required due to their job to use the company approved AI over another. If say Amazon says no to Gemini but yes to something like Claude well that blocks a ton of people from being able to leverage Gemini in an area where they can make a ton of money.
Unless people start paying some serious cash for use of AI models, something I do not see happening at all, then the AI companies will rely on business uses. This is where OpenAI and Anthropic have their openings. Anthropic in particular doesnt even target individual users and instead goes after businesses and certain areas like coding.
Data privacy is a huge concern with companies and a major hurdle for institutional adoption. Companies cannot risk proprietary or client information becoming part of a public model.
I think that’s a big reason OpenAI maintains significant market share with its enterprise product.
Yeah its huge and OpenAI was the first to cut deals and agree to firewalls to protect data and have continued to do so. With tech in general once you are able to capture it becomes harder and harder to migrate to other platforms within the same space.
Gemini's training data includes Google Books (40 million titles) and YouTube auto-generated scripts. It's hard to compete with that.
Wonder how apple traded on this news today.

I agree that Apple totally missed the mark on AI development, but this move helps get them back in the game by leveraging their existing products and distribution model.
Apple’s hardware is still the primary way consumers access the mobile web. Just as Google pays Apple for Google Search to be the default in Safari, which helped assert Google’s dominance in Search, licensing Gemini allows Apple to shortcut years of R&D.
Apple licensing Gemini might just be the move they need to turn Siri into the dominant, AI Assistant in the space.
Last I had read this was struck down in the courts.
Apple will need to be able to get integration into Microsoft products to really capture the assistant space. I dont see people having one assistant for work and one for personal use so the assistant is going to have to be able to do both.
