You’re right about the core principle: Lightning should remain push-only. No merchant should be able to pull funds from your wallet.

But “subscriptions” don’t require pull payments. They require recurring push with user-set rules.

“Pay X sats monthly to this merchant only, up to a cap. Stop if the amount changes. I can revoke anytime.” That’s sovereignty with automation.

Cards are merchant-pull. This is still wallet-push, just scheduled.

Some people will always prefer manual monthly approval. Totally fine. Merchants still need predictable billing (retries, receipts, access control). Lightning can support both: manual renewals and opt-in rules-based autopay.

some people

Those are the ones that are still living in a fiat world and don"t want to change.
Bitcoin is also about changing the mentality.
We should not try to adapt bitcoin to exiting old fiat behaviors but changing our behavior.

A "scheduled" payment is a fiat mentality that push people into more spending without thinking. Compulsory spending.

When you literally have to make that payment manualy you still have time to use your brain twice before you pay something. That makes you review better on what you spend your sats.

Incredible how people nowadays do not realize how powerful is every sat and they just throw it away on stupid things "scheduled".

On SN, every reply is manual. You choose to post it. But if you’ve got enough sats in your wallet, the paying part feels basically automatic. You don’t “think twice” about the fee each time because it’s within the budget you already set.

That’s the same distinction I’m making for Lightning subscriptions:
manual intent, automated execution.

You pre-commit once: “Pay X sats monthly to this merchant only, up to a cap. Stop if the amount changes. I can revoke anytime.” Then the wallet pushes it on schedule only inside those constraints.

So it’s not fiat-style merchant-pull or “compulsory spending.” It’s wallet-push that feels automatic because you funded it and capped it, like SN posting feels frictionless once your wallet has sats.
