They have to because a few players have talked about it and now they are running the risk of free agents not wanting to sign with the team because they are worried about this.

Apparently the Timberwolves installed some emf modulation devices in their arena and practice facility. Looking into that might be a good starting point.

What's the biological theory that's being offered up as to how it affects injury risk?

The theory is long term elevated exposure degrades muscle and tendon strength thus leading to more injuries when put under stress.

This is obviously a simplification of the theory but that's the basic premise.

Interesting. The scientists that disregard it are probably working off of evidence from studies that just look at averages of samples. For the level of stress that these athletes undergo, existing scientific studies may not be very relevant (not that I know the literature, I am speaking out of my sphincter here.)

reply

Right. This might not cause any notable issues for normal folks but maybe even a small degradation of muscle, tissue, tendons etc is enough to increase injuries in guys that are playing a highly physical sport where they are already pushing the limits of what humans are biologically capable of. I am amenable to the idea that even minute effects can be significant for these guys.

Maybe it's as simple as the exposure slows recovery and with persistent stress eventually something snaps.

It really seems like a worth while idea to check out. There’s clearly something going on

I asked Gemini...

No, the electrical substation is not new.

While the theory about it has recently gone viral, the station has been in operation since 1986. The 49ers have used the adjacent practice facility since 1988, meaning they have been operating next to it for nearly 40 years.

Key points regarding its history:

  • Original Build: 1986.
  • 49ers Arrival: 1988 (during which they won three Super Bowls).
  • Expansion: The station was expanded in 2014 to coincide with the opening of Levi's Stadium, which significantly increased its size.
Critics of the theory point out that the team was highly successful and relatively healthy at this same location for decades before the recent "injury curse" began around 2014.

It will be interesting if they find it does contribute to anything. Maybe we need athletes agents to look into other things. Not holding my breath that they find anything.
