If you like Timothee Chalamet (and can see past the fact he is dating Kylie Jenner), and you are yourself a narcissist, then I think you will like this movie.

Besides the comedic use of the film's shock-value and some gripping displays of athleticism from the film's talent (but don't expect much out of Tyler The Creator or Kevin O'Dreary), there was not much that I liked about this movie. Pain, would have been how I described the experience, had you asked me when I left the theatre.

The film recounts the misadventures of its protagonist, an obsessively driven American table tennis player loosely based on Marty Reisman, whose claim to fame he presumably describes in his modestly named memoir The Money Player.

If I had to guess at the themes Safdie aimed for, I'd wager he was trying to make a statement about American exceptionalism, but he didn't exactly hit this home. Instead, he subjects his audience to more than two hours of his anti-hero's flat, narcissistic character arch, a few impressive ping-pong scenes, and a poor-poor canine (a sub-plot I found to be painfully gratuitous). I kept finding myself mouthing the words more ping-pong!

Yes, Chalamet played the part well, and the exuberance and energy he brought to the role was certainly a spectacle, which in itself might be one reason to watch the film.

I'm a big fan of reviews that make me not want to watch a movie. We should have a genre of negative reviews.

The ultimate skill would in reviewing a film negatively while inspiring curiosity. After all, some movies are so bad that they're good, right?

True, but I'm more interested in a negative review that doesn't make me want to watch the movie, but which is an enjoyable review to read. You achieved this with your review here. It was very enjoyable.

Thanks you for the kind remarks, mister. To tell the truth, in this one i tried being fair!

& I agree, smear reviews can be a genre of their own.

Nothing is more enjoyable than the schadenfreude of a good critical takedown

Thank you! Chalamet was good, but I found myself disliking every character, and I had no interest whatsoever in the story line. I literally had to leave the theater and wait in the hallway for my wife with about a half hour left. It seemed endless. I didn't appreciate the humor either. I am baffled that there are actually people who enjoyed this movie.

Holy shit! I hadn't checked the Tomatometer until i read your comment. I just talked to one or two film-heads before going who talked it up. I'm stunned...

I thought they went much too far with the dog.

This isn't the first negative review I've seen of the movie, though I can't remember where I saw the first, or if it was simply someone who told me they didn't like it. In either case, seems like a skip

Just watched the first hour or so...its ok but the wife found it 'fast but boring' and I would not disagree with her on that.
5/10 watchable and well made but not a great movie.
