We talked to @chrisliss last week, #1428775, and he gave his impression of Stacker News, which was roughly as follows:

  1. This is the content model of the future.
  2. It already works and is easy to use.
  3. Normies don't know how to get started.

Eventually, Stacker News needs to have a Getting Started tutorial but it needs to go further than just how to use the site. It also needs to help ~bitcoin_beginners make good initial setup choices.

What are the simplest steps to go from fiat-maxi no-coiner to sat-zapping stacker? Ideally, these will also be good privacy and security choices.

The main issue still is the fiat interface. The only reliable zero-to-hero I have for nocoiners is: sell me something, I'll pay you in sats. Can't send a newbie to bisq or robosats. Shouldn't send them to a KYC exchange.

reply

I think we may need to suck it up and at least point out how to use something like CashApp to get sats easily.

It's not ideal, but a lot of people have CashApp already, so this is showing them how to use something they already have to get started with bitcoin.

reply

That works in the US. Outside of the US, there is no CashApp.

CashApp banned me in 2019 because I made one btc deposit

Maybe you deposited BTC that was fresh out of a coinjoin or from a blacklisted address? I make BTC on-chain deposits to CashApp nearly every day. Have been for years.

I have literally never sold Bitcoin for fiat, aka pieces of paper. Am I doing this right?

That's yet another issue. Different jurisdictions will have their own best setups.

The issue is not how easy is to use a btc app...
The issue is WHO you are going to onboard. Not all needs to be saved.

I’m with you there

THIS 👆

I did that with many nocoiners. They were paying my fiat bills, I gave them sats. Directly to their wallet.
Then they start learning more. And that's how I started writing guides, because I have to explain them over and over the same things. So was easier to just put them to read.

EXACTLY lmao

reply

You can't teach nocoiners straight from SN. They need an intermediary step for basic stuff.
Yes they can read articles guides etc but SN is not a teaching platforn.
Consider it more like a stackexchange.

reply

You are right that SN is a pretty 'advanced' platform... nocoiners don't even know what they are receiving on Stacker News or why they should care.

reply

The specific scenario here is that someone who has an existing audience wants them to stop subscribing on Substack and start zapping him on Fountain and Stacker News.

So, we have an answer for why they should care.

reply

Yes, this is a good scenario.

suffers from "too many cooks" and it is not @k00b's fault, I honestly admire the "maximally open source" approach

reply

Something like Stacker News has never existed before, that's the hard part

You are too young in Bitcoin...
Long before SN ever existed it was Yalls - https://yalls.org where you post with sats and read with sats. And you really HAVE TO connect your LN node.
Site owned by no other than LL CTO Alex Bossworth.

Then was another one something like zap.news or something like that, but died in its infancy.

reply

You're telling me there was 2 other Stacker News before... and they failed?
We had better not fuck it up this time

Do the other stackers know this?

reply
65 sats \ 2 replies \ @DarthCoin 4h

No. Not that where other SNs. Were "SN like", using sats to read/post.
What I am trying to tell you is that yalls.org is still up and running. But is kind of other way to use it, not like SN.
SN just did it in another way for a broader audience.
What failed was that zap.news (sorry I can't find anymore the link) site that tried almost the same way as SN, but died after 1 year.

reply

How do we keep Stacker News from failing like those did? (I understand that Yalls still exists)

Did they get as far as Stacker News has?

You are too young in Bitcoin...

the only polite way to respond right now is muting you.

don't worry, I review all comments, and you'll probably get unmuted within a few days.

postponing any response to your ad-hominem is for our mutual respect and improving the typical standard of conversation, and not implying any cheapened value to your comments.

reply

So what? I ignored you for so long.
For me you are just a useless AI bot. I am happy that a bot do not read my posts.

reply

Also SN is not an "earning platform" as many think it is and come here to "earn sats"...
SN is "PAY TO POST"

reply

CoinOS. Minibits wallet for better privacy (still custodial).
Or just skip both and use Zeus Wallet on your phone.

Zeus has eCash to start, then it suggests you "open a channel" to their LSP, then you use that non-custodially to send and receive.

You can close that channel at any time and get an on-chain UTXO... that wasn't even yours. It was Zeus's to begin with which obviously is a privacy improvement.

reply

Seems that you never onboarded a nocoiner...

reply

I have tried. I have had very minimal success... the takeup is very slow

My advice, as an old bitcoiner that was all the way into this, I suggest you to never push any app you personally use into a nocoiner.
What YOU are comfortable and like to use is NOT suitable for a nocoiner and you can make things even worse.

reply

Idk about literal steps, but if anyone uses traditional social media and accumulates “likes”, hearts, or whatever - just seeing people send and receive real money for content should be motivation enough to learn more

reply

It was for me but apparently some people like to have instructions

reply

I think instructions would be good. Definitely not arguing against that

reply

I'm sure there will always be a Raw Dog option, where people just show up and mess around until they figure it out.

The idea is that some people will have specific uses like posting their content or supporting someone they follow but no bandwidth for all the bitcoin steps they need to take to get there.

... or, it makes the whole thing stink of bait-and-switch. not all nocoiners are created equal

IMO it would be a couple of signups. SN and Rizful, connect the LN wallet via NWC.

I'd probably add in a password manager too (which is usually the case with beginners).

reply

I haven't used Rizful. Is it easy to buy sats?

reply
56 sats \ 1 reply \ @OT 16h

I don't think you can buy sats on there. It's just an easy to connect LN wallet that you can use from the browser.

reply

Ok, so we'd still need a fiat to sats step.

reply

There used to be a multitude of apps that yielded sats, but most of them have died down.

Cointiply still works in my country. Do some surveys while watching TV. Let ads run in the background during work. Transfer the data earned there to a LN wallet.

reply

Yeah, Fountain and Zebedee used to yield more free sats. I think that would be a good option to offer new Stackers.

Chris was talking about how he has longtime Substack subscribers who would switch to supporting him on nostr or SN but they found it too daunting to figure out how to get sats in the first place.

until folks lose the delusion that all men are created equal, it will be difficult onboarding those who will read copypasta without understanding how interchangeable interlocutors could still have wildly opposed financial incentives.

does that mean that normies can't use the site? nah.... yet normies could also zap notes, if getting that stack set up were easier than registering on this website.

reply
  1. he won his super bowl bet vs me

that's probably 1 but he won't admit it

reply

I don't really know how to get around the requirement of having a lightning wallet in order to get started. 99% of normies who otherwise might be interested in SN because of its content don't have that. Unless k00b lets normies start buying cowboy credits with filthy fiat

"The biggest barrier is definitely the 'fear of doing it wrong.' I know someone who just joined and they were terrified of losing their savings or leaking their location just by asking a question.

For beginners, a tutorial should focus on:

Explaining that an address isn't a 'leak' of your identity.

How to move from a local Telegram/P2P seller to a self-custody wallet without feeling like a hacker.

We need to bridge the gap between 'tech-lingo' and real-life survival."
