I am an OG bitcoiner. When bitcoin became unusable as money, and the core devs started talking about using credit cards instead of actually using bitcoin, I thought BCH might be the way forward.
Now, BCH devs have made a lot of mistakes, and BTC has won the popularity wars, but I am still concerned about lightning. All along, all I wanted was a decentralized, reliable, noninflationary money. However, lightning is becoming very centralized. It seems to be fulfilling all the worst expectations of the BCH / decentralized money advocates.
For example, now in order to use lightning on nostr, you basically have to use a custodial wallet in order to get a lightning address (one of those email formatted addresses for your LN wallet). Yes, you can use your own node, but nobody normal is going to do that. I want a decentralized money for everyone. I don't want everyone to be subject to censorship except for a few geeks running their own nodes.
My real concern now is... can I really support lightning going forward, if it leads to this level of centralized control? Can I really promote this technology if it is going to push everyone into custodial wallets? Or is there some hope on the horizon for true decentralization without people running their own nodes?......
Honestly, I'm not wedded to any particular technology. I just want to truly have free money for everyone -- to allow people to escape fiat. In order to do that, we have to have easy-to-use wallets free of censorship and centralized control, and we need to have merchants accepting it directly so that we aren't subject to bottlenecks in the form of exchanges just to spend our money.
Who here is really willing to respond honestly to this post and think about the future of our monetary freedom? Do we need another solution? Maybe it's something like a different 2L on bitcoin based on zk proofs? I honestly don't care what it is, but we can't be stuck with a technology that is subject to censorship and bottlenecks. We have to preserve and extend the freedom that bitcoin originally envisioned and provided to us.

Same! And for that, you will be persecuted by deranged, greedy people

I am a pharmacist by education, and running my lightning node :)
Just takes a little effort - not really that complicated.
reply
I know. But 99% of people will never do that.

Do the primitives of Lightning even make sense for personal use cases?
Your node can be blacklisted, you have to open and close a channel if you want to make a single one-off payment, etc
reply
Yea - it does. blacklisted by who? All my connections are other plebs - everyday users of the network, no enterprise nodes - except one which I milk for routing sats.
My channels are with everyday users of the network who in aggregate are well-connected and I can reach anyone and so they can.
reply
your model relies on everyone running their own nodes then?
blacklisting would be done by major corporations and institutions.
So if we live in a Distributist society, Lightning would work great

I use Pheonix and I'm doing fine.

Just run your own node. If my non-technical GF can learn to do so, so can you.

Fun fact: Did you know that a bcasher is dumber than any GF? The OP was brainwashed by bcash trash team and now his brain is fried.... I don't think he understand anymore how is to run a BTC node.

and you are a clown and I don't give a shit.
reply
You're a moron, obviously. I can run any node I want in my sleep, but that's not the issue.

You prove it yourself how dumb you are. Even after 10 years you learned nothing LOL
reply
It's not about me. It's about the average person, who is never going to do that.
reply
Ohhh a bcasher trying to explain himself... right.
reply
I'm not a 'bcasher'. Read the actual words I wrote in the post, bro. FYI, I have held 99% BTC for the past ten years.

You literally said that you joined into shitcoiners land.... That say it all. You were just rambling around all these years FOR NOTHING. You waste your time learning nothing.

If in 2023 you are still in that "denial phase"... sorry but "no soup for you shitcoiner!"
