I'm curious what experience other territory operators have had with this and how they made their decisions

50,000 sats for one month56.3%
500,000 sats for one year12.5%
3 million sats for perpetuity31.3%

Maybe it's once in a lifetime opportunity to get eternal territory

Long time ago early adopters payed 10 and even 50 Bitcoin to get vip status on bitcointalk, today these amounts blow my mind.

3 million sats is a lot today, in the future it'll be unreachable, imo

I'll be like Laszlo. No regrets!

Go monthly until you know it is something you want to do long term and are comfortable with the finances of.

reply

I don't know where we'll be 6 years later, but at this point I'm not really treating this like an investment, or even a toy. If I do the perpetual, I'm thinking of it more like a donation to an ecosystem that I want to support.

reply

This is my logic. I don’t expect to ever
make a return.

If you can afford it, having the math territory in perpetuity seems like a boon in the long run

reply

math is definitely the kind of universal subject where it makes sense

looks like i better start posting more!

you should!

My vote is monthly. I enjoy the math content and I'd love to see it grow, but a year-long commitment is big.

reply

Went with a year. Gives me option value to go perpetual if I decide that later, while saving me 2 months worth of costs.

reply

Pro tip: if you pay for a year during the month, it only costs 450k. Similarly, if you then buy it outright during the year, it only costs 2.5M.

reply

Good point. I ended opting for a year. I knew I wasn't going to abandon it after just a few months, so going for a year saves me potentially 2 months worth of costs, with the option value of going for perpetuity if I later decide to.

Depends whether you see it as an investment, a hobby, or a contribution to SN culture. Different answer for each one tbh.

reply

Definitely not thinking of it as an investment right now. I know it's most likely a money sink, not a profitable venture.

3 MILLION SATS could best option

Stacker News is not a viable economic platform.
It has failed to garner sufficient participants who contribute sats (real money) and has instead attracted too many arsemilking parasites who churn out low value, cheap and repetitive content and who sybil pump their posts and milk sats out of the platform.
As a territory owner you are on a losing bet.
What is needed is a serious and honest dialogue including SNs about how the situation can be turned around.
Good luck with that!
If such an event were to occur, then territory base fees would need to be slashed and a percentage of territory revenue shared with SNs.
That way there is an INCENTIVE for SNs to build the consumer base- currently there really isn't much incentive for them to do that and so territory owners are captives to a centralised system where their best interests are not aligned with SNs owners/operators.
