This seems like a really cool improvement!

It's like Square read all the SN "field report" threads about trying to pay with BTC at Square terminals haha

Good change.

amen. I appreciate them continually trying to improve. I only hope they roll out updates that work for lower end hardware too, since Car mentioned that being a barrier for some merchants

Anyone know if this works for Square in Japan? I have been talking to some merchants, if it could just be turned on that would be awesome. @bradjpn

Hey thanks for the tag. Unfortunately no. I don't know how Square US handles the conversion on the back end, but they either need an in-house liquidity desk or exchange partner to offer real-time fiat payout of bitcoin payments. Obtaining the license to engage in that in Japan would take quite a while; partnering with a Japanese exchange would likely be quicker but still a heavy lift. Many compliance hoops to jump through.

So it would take someone senior at Square Japan who's also a bitcoiner and seriously committed to seeing this happen, and I'm not sure such a person exists, nor how closely Square Japan follows what Square US does. Based on my company's usage of Square, they seem fairly separate.

That said, I'd absolutely love to see this happen, so if anyone at Square happens to be reading this, not that I have much to offer but I'm happy to shoot the shit about what this would entail, and make introductions if I can. I'll also hit up my normie friends who work at Square Japan and see what the vibe is.

Follow-up, I asked my friend who works at Square Japan and she said she doesn't know anyone passionate about bitcoin there and that US and Japan have completely different strategies.

go to these palces! No matter where you're from. Owner seems to be on the right path, but i'm the only person who's spent sats there so far. I don't want to lose them :(

Just when will this come to Canada! We are desperate!

I still think it's a good idea to use this as a conversation starter with the sellers.

I agree. But perhaps it is less awkward if the customer has the ability to toggle it on. No getting up in their business about how to do it and all that. Just: "oh cool, I didn't know you guys accepted bitcoin!"

Exactly! Last time I used this I said something like "Can I pay with bitcoin? Oh cool, the option is actually right here, that was easy"

Should make things less awkward for everyone involved, I would think

👏👏 Time to test this out

Feels placing the responsability in the customer side to pay in bitcoin is much better. In the other side the business can chose how to receive privately. Thta's a really really good ~design decision!
