What is a great way to spend Father's Day? Go watch a World Cup match with your kids! That was what I did today, as I went to the Egypt vs New Zealand match at BC Place Stadium with my 3 kids. It was an awesome experience! All my kids and I really enjoyed the game and we had a great time.
The stadium was rocking and loud; vibes were high. There were definitely more Egypt fans than New Zealand fans. Even though they were out numbered, the New Zealand fans were loud, especially when they scored the first goal. But when Egypt scored their first goal in the second half, the stadium went berserk! And when Mo Salah scored the go ahead goal, it felt like the stadium's roof was going to get blown away by the roar and cheer. The third goal by Egypt was just icing on the cake, but the stadium still went into a frenzy with that one. Even though I was sitting pretty close to the net, too bad all the scoring happened on the other net. I was able to see all the goals pretty clearly, but it would have been nice if some or all of the goals were scored on the net close to us. I wasn't supporting either team, and was just happy to experience the beautiful game up close with my kids. Here are some photos I took during this memorable Father's Day.
We got off the Main Street Science World SkyTrain station and started our way towards BC Place Stadium. Science world turned into a huge football.
BC Place Stadium in sight.
Looking at BC Place and Rogers Arena across false creek. Rogers Area used to be called GM Place where the Vancouver Grizzlies used to play.
A group of Egypt fans partying along the road.
Security was quick and easy to pass. This spot is already past security. There are still so many people. I remember the jumbotron showed during the game saying that there were more than 52k people in the stadium today.
We found our entry gate and entered the stadium.
Inside the stadium. We got here 2 hours early, so we had some time to kill.
Flags were laid on the pitch, players lined up, getting ready for kickoff.
Game on!
Not only the players get a water break, the grass get a water break too. Fans were booing the water break though, haha.
The 3 dudes sitting in front of us got this wave going. I only showed a short moment of this wave, but it went around the whole stadium a good 3 to 4 loops before stopping. It's cool that once you get a wave started, it keeps on going for quite a while before it stops.
Egypt freekick near the net. A good opportunity and near miss for Egypt to equalize the scoring in the first half.
We were hungry and got footlong hotdogs for snack at halftime.
Some action near the net close to us.
New Zealand trying to get back into the game. But it was already 3-1 with little time left. They would go on to lose the game 3-1.
Saw this guy biking with an inflatable floating football during our walk from the stadium to the SkyTrain station.
We were all headed toward the SkyTrain station.
We all got these fan ID after we passed the ticket gate. They were handed out to all attendees as a souvenir.
In the end, of course I need to show off the best part of my special Father's Day experience: receiving gifts from all three kids. /FLEX!
Very cool! I heard from someone who was at the Sweden vs Holland game in Houston last week that it was a little subdued, but perhaps this is because it got of to an early lopsided start.
Glad you all had fun!
This was a comeback game for Egypt, and most of the stadium were Egypt fans, so vibes got higher as Egypt scored more goals.
I believe this is the only dedicated MLS stadium used in the tournament other than Toronto. Would really love to catch a game there one day. Looks like you caught a solid one.
No, BC Place Stadium is not a dedicated MLS stadium, but a mixed used stadium shared with the BC Lions that play in the CFL. I remember going to a BC Lions game back in elementary school when they handed out free nosebleed section tickets to higher grade classes. It is a very nice stadium. Come catch a Whitecaps or BC Lions game, or even a World Cup game if you feel like stacking quite a few less extra sats.
The BMO Field in Toronto is indeed a dedicated MLS stadium.

Awesome day! If you don’t mind sharing how much did the tickets cost?
They were $494.50 CAD each, not the best viewing area, but second row seats nonetheless. I got them from the official FIFA resale marketplace in late May before the tournament started. When there were news kept saying stadium tickets did not sell out and vibes were pretty low regarding the tournament in Vancouver. It felt like the same before the 2010 Olympics, where people were not interested and vibes were low before the tournament starts. Then craze starts and the city really gets into it once the tournament starts.
Nice! Theoretically it’s not a very exciting match, but these games between supposedly weaker nations can still turn into a good spectacle. Egypt’s Salah is a top player. The spot you were in isn’t the best for following how the plays unfold, but it’s perfect for getting up close to the players.
It was a good game, and a comeback game for what felt like the "home team" as most fans in the stadium were Egypt fans.
Very cool! Glad you got to go!
Thanks!
That’s awesome. Sounds like you had a great day. The match was pretty good too.
Thanks! It was a really cool experience, especially when shared with my kids.
Great day! I'm glad you enjoy it!
Thanks!
Both team are doing their well.
Errr I hate fifa so many racist cops about getting quotas
Thanks
