Dude apparently has a documentary. my god what a waste

So, the boomers fucked the world and siphoned off a bunch of wealth... with the predictable consequence that a bunch of wishy-washy retarded millennials are out campaigning against capitalism and how markets don't work.

summary background:

If you are one of the 1.6mn subscribers to Garyseconomics on YouTube, then you may be familiar with the details of Gary Stevenson’s life story. He grew up in Ilford, east London, in a working-class family. He excelled at maths at school and studied maths and economics at LSE. In 2008, he began working for Citibank as an interest rates trader and at 25 he became a millionaire. Two years later, Stevenson walked away from the industry, and now works as an unlikely campaigner against inequality. His solution to fixing broken Britain is a tax of 2 per cent on wealth above £10mn.

"This lively but sprawling documentary hangs, loosely, on explaining the need for that tax, though at times its grip is so relaxed that it fails to deliver a coherent narrative."

Over the course of an hour, this documentary darts off into various corners of British society in an attempt to make Stevenson’s point: if billionaires hoard wealth, it disappears from the rest of society. [...] The link between effort and achievement has worn thin in recent years, Stevenson thinks, and this erosion of meritocracy has led to people searching for solutions to social inequality outside of electoral politics. It is, he argues, a clear threat to democracy.

He's not wrong in that observation.

YouTube is a medium in which the presenter largely talks at the audience. This is effective for a campaigner, but when it comes to conducting interviews, which require a back-and-forth, it can make for a frustrating experience. Stevenson is impassioned and earnest throughout, but nobody here is willing to budge. As a result, this is less a persuasive rallying cry than a series of conversations in which men who disagree with each other repeatedly butt heads.

3 stars.

(full disclosure: I haven't seen the documentary itself, I generally find Mr. Gary off-putting and unnecessary. Mostly just ignore him.)

I wonder how much friction there is in public discourse due to the different sides using words differently.

I do watch some progressive media and they like to use the term "late stage capitalism." What they mean by that seems to be precisely the kind of financialized, extract-rents and move-money-around-rather-than-create-value, zombie/crony capitalism that we Bitcoiners also oppose.

Because of that, I feel like some socialists could be persuaded to see the monetary system as part of the culprit.

they might refer to that now, but I'm pretty sure that's not what Marx and his early followers meant by it.

If I recall my marxian economics properly: they meant maximum intensity/exploitation of labor, until the point the workers revolt and capitalism collapses under its own contradiction.

We don't have that; we have the most privileged, high-income, good-life living brats screaming about inequality and "cApITaLiSM"! (which thye, btw, have spent about five minutes investigating)

I can't remember who said it back in the day, but the best explanation in my opinion was that the use of captured terms doesn't serve to discuss a topic in earnest with any precision, rather it serves as rallying cry and for the speaker to identify themselves with the group they seek approval from.

Please tell me that his net worth was £9mn when he proposed that.

Never fails. "Everyone with more than me should give some back...to me."

I remember when Bernie proposed some tax on the 0.1% because he himself is not in that category, but rather the 1%

“I wrote a best-selling book,” [Sanders] declared. “If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too.”

what, capitalism like WORKS?! was beautiful. fun times. https://fee.org/articles/bernie-to-americans-pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps

Almost as good as when he bragged/defended private jet use last year

He notably stopped saying "millionaires and billionaires" when it was revealed that he is a millionaire.

That must be why I hate the boomers so much #1521908

Our system of forced redistribution doesn't work. Let's call that capitalism. And let's fix it with more redistribution that we shall then call something nicer.
