I don't know of a standard for authenticating with Nostr on the web, but it is possible to do using Nostr signing extensions.
NIP-07 provides the signEvent function to web apps, NIP-42 defines an event that is signed by the user to authenticate against a relay. The same type of event, or a similar one, could be used for web authentication as well.

eh, sounds too compromising

What do you mean? Compromising what? Your privacy?
You don't have to use it.

my bad for assuming stacker.news has a community preference for privacy. Silly assumption of mine.

Not a silly assumption. I also think there is a preference.
But nostr itself is not compromising your privacy. You just generate a keypair and are anonymous on nostr. Linking that account to SN does not mean that you are suddenly no longer anonymous.
However, you can argue that you have less privacy now since more information about you is exposed. So maybe that's where you are coming from? But it's still a choice.
So I don't get why you are against it. This makes it more accessible for nostr users who don't care about linking nostr and SN. They are still anonymous afterwards, anyway.

I think is the way that https://vida.page made it

I like this idea, there is a logo available for exactly this for those who want to adopt it
