I am in the middle of a long car ride this morning to pick up friends from the airport. The Sirius CNBC channel has been on in the background. I don't listen to it much anymore. I was surprised to hear Lyn Alden commenting during an AI and semiconductor segment. It was mentioned that Lyn was a frequent guest discussing macro issues. I had no idea she has spread her brand to MSM.
Right after that they discussed the Clarity Act. Some Solana PR person was the guest. She was rambling about blockchain and crypto, then referred to the bitcoin white paper, saying something like "bitcoin was designed to be peer to peer money, not some kind of digital gold." At one point she said something like " we at Solana...", as if she was a representative of any company, like JNJ or Amazon. I tried to imagine anyone speaking like that about bitcoin. The notion is comical.
What do I make of this? Well, I didn't realize the wider world had discovered Lyn Alden. It was also weird hearing a Solana shill referring to the white paper. The world is changing rapidly
I've encountered her before in mainstream (not crypto focused) finance podcasts, so I always got the sense that she isn't specifically a bitcoin/crypto focused personality
I used to like Lyn a lot but recently I cooled off on her and her content.
I keep asking myself is she saying anything new or keeps repeating the same talking points?
Then I look and see what her VC funds have done. Nothing has gone public I can’t name a single impactful company her and Jeff Booth have invested in.
Now this new Orange Juice PE firm and that raised $40M and she slyly throws Saylor under the bus.
Shills her meh fiction book to the bitcoin community.
If you look at her investments she has holdings in almost every company on the stock market. Makes me ask what do you stand for!
So I keep asking myself why is she getting so much love from the community?
Now she’s a feature on CNBC?!? Things I ponder about!
Do you read her newsletter (paid or public)?
To me, she offers new and fresh perspectives more often than any other analyst (definitely not repeating the same points, except the ones ppl seem to keep missing).
She does it in a way that I appreciate. Cold facts, articulated with brevity and without emotion. She boils complex concepts down to first-principles and doesn't get lost in the weeds.
I can't find content like this anywhere else.
Her new OJ venture appears to be the best and most honest way to propagate Bitcoin adoption in a fiat world. What Saylor is doing is supporting the dollar, with a little Bitcoin sprinkled in. He should be thrown under the bus. Fiat-Financialization of Bitcoin, while inevitable to some degree, is the opposite of Bitcoin adoption and should not be praised by this community.
I don't think she's really "shilled" her fiction book. She mentions it briefly and moves on. This is about the same level "shilling" she did for her first book, "Broken Money".
If you had an audience, and you created a new work that took you a few years of research and time, would you not want to mention it to your audience? She's never shilled her books in a cringy way, in my opinion. She humbly mentions it, and moves on. In fact, this is a refreshing amount of "shilling" in this new digital age of over-shilling everything.
Public. Information deserves to be free! Why charge when you can make your money in the market and off your investments!
If the ideas were so great and she made a killing why charge for your services? Plus she doesn’t nail everything.
They raised $40M Saylor can raise that in his sleep every day. This whole “cash flow businesses” sounds like a dog whistle to to one up the treasury companies. Plus we already have a track record of her business skills by being on a VC board with Jeff Booth. Give me three real world examples of what OJ is going to do differently with a $40M war chest?
Both books are for the bitcoin community. She didn’t write a fiction book about goblins in an enchanted land. She wrote to her core to generate sales.
She doesn’t over shill that’s correct. As I said before I was a big fan of Lyn’s but the low brow attack against Saylor is uncalled for in my honest opinion.
I just ask myself what has she done lately that gives her the confidence to throw Saylor under the bus?
I'll help her push😀 I know you and I differ on this.
I do agree with you on some other stuff, though. I'm not hugely impressed by the ego death portfolio. I like the Orange Juice idea, but let's see where it goes.
One thing about her. She is really smart. Uncommonly smart, and that counts for a lot.
But what is intelligence without results?
Marco is something you can be wrong about and not have any negative consequences really. A few of her readers might get some trades wrong but overall I am struggling to find the actual value of this intelligence!
The Ego Death portfolio should be going great with companies we would all know about due to her intelligence being actionable in the real market place where wrong decisions cost you. But so far nothing but duds.
I am just perplexed how Saylor gets so much hate when he’s done way more for people with tangible results that a Marco influencer who champions the talking points of Bitcoin but has done nothing but pump her own bags.
At least when Mallers dunks on Saylor he owns Strike which is a great application!
I had to google what she looked like but I’ve seen her on various CNBC TV programs to discuss Bitcoin and CLARITY.
In recent meetings, briefings, and events I've been to industry people are quick to highlight the white paper and BTC being a means of exchange/peer-to-peer payment method. It's my belief they are doing that to frame BTC as currency to get tax legislation done to fix the taxation on transactions.
This thing where some shitcoiner comments on some Bitcoin narrative they picked up on social media or even msm - or even created themselves (remember those twitter shitcoiner "prominents" claiming every chance they got that Bitcoin is captured by bankers, since 2020 or so?) - and then use that to promote their shitcoin... it gets to me every time. They never compare apples to apples (as they cannot) and just narrate some bullshit about how solana, which you can't even validate on a new macbook pro you'd pay 10 grand for, is better? Ugh! And worst of all, they get away with it, every time and get invited again...
Mood: 🤬
That's awesome. Lyn is insightful on a number of topics, so I'm glad that she's broken into the mainstream. I remember when Yahoo finance and CNBC started covering bitcoin regularly and how strange that felt. With more economists like Lyn around, it will just seem like second nature to the next generation when they start to follow economic news.
Until recently, those traditional media outlets only talked about Bitcoin to spread lies or highlight negative aspects – the classic ‘Bitcoin is only for criminals’.
Of course, the world is changing; we can now see that, in a way, they’re actually promoting Bitcoin.
We are winning...?
It will be interesting to see is any Senate Dems sign on to the ethics provision brokered in the Senate. My understanding is that is the last bit hickup left in the Senate.
I have never listened to the CNBC radio channel does it just simulcast what’s on tv or is it different content entirely.
Bitcoin doesn't need a PR team. That's one of its biggest strengths.
Feels like we're watching Bitcoin grow up in real time.
The more Bitcoin enters the mainstream, the more obvious the difference between a decentralized protocol and a company becomes.
It's funny how Bitcoin keeps becoming the reference point for the entire industry.
