For me the main resistance to self custody lightning like phoenixd is the need to pay for inbound liquidity and the online receive requirements.  The Ark implementations mostly fix that (except for the vUTXO requirement in my opinion)

I haven't messed with any of the Ark stuff yet. Why might you use it over something like 

? afaict with the Ark layers, they have online requirements, while getting rid of the cognitive overhead of channels. Is that what you find compelling?
