That destroys the entry point.

How will you make your first sat ever, on SN?

Talk to people on SN and figure out how to get bitcoin and create a lightning wallet.

reply

Right, so goodwill instead of merit. Fine... but then: how do I extract sats from every person that sponsored a bot to post slop that I then had to downzap even more?

reply

no, I didn't mean beg for your first sats. I mean connect your own lightning wallet and use your own bitcoin that you got from somewhere else (or use them to buy CCs)

but the idea is that you can still talk to people here even if you don't know how to do all that. you just won't earn any tips until you actually pay to post

reply
use your own bitcoin

But I asked about

your first sat ever

Which implies you don't have any sats. That's what I understand the freebies to be for: to introduce people to Bitcoin that before coming to SN have never interacted with it. Like organic orange pilling.

reply

If they come here without having any bitcoin, and they enjoy the conversation here, they can learn from the users here how to buy their own bitcoin, then use that to acquire CCs or connect a wallet and start posting for real

reply

Personally, I'd be saddened if "buy it" becomes the only alternative to "earn it". But that's just me, being a foreign debanked monkey worth less than the average roll of US toilet paper with no future and even less prestige to cling on to.

reply

That's the frustrating thing about AI slop.... and system abusers of any kind, really. The presence of abusers constrains the design of the system, forcing it to make undesirable tradeoffs.

We could just live with the slop. It hasn't become so prevalent that it's meaningfully degraded the site. But I say that as an experienced user who recognizes nyms and whose own nym is recognized by others. I imagine the influx of bots is making the new user experience way worse, as people question whether they're human, and where they can't necessarily tell right away whether they're interacting with a human or a bot.

reply

If, in response to bots, the message to new users is "buy bitcoin or gtfo", then I think that we've indeed destroyed the user experience for new, human, non-bitcoiner users.

There is a cool cypherpunk future where SN becomes something like robosats: established users selling sats to new users. Easy to dream about, probably a thorn-bush in implementation.

reply

The future is now. It's called zaps. Sell information, funny anecdotes, insights... for sats.

couldn't we do this:

if you zap a post which a number of other stackers then downzap, you lose some ranking in the reward pool

I'm not so good with the permutations of how things have changed, but i think I remember a time when we had something like this dynamic with trust. If trust gets reintroduced, I could see this working. Without trust it would be vulnerable to a sock puppet attack.

Absolutely not. This incentivizes the formation of organized gangs to loot the reward pool.

The reward pool still has trust, unless I missed a recent commit

you are correct. I was getting my wires crossed.
