Scoresby shared this and I feel the quantity of slop around here is increasing to a point where we should do something.

So I thought we could shoot out here accounts that we must mute and avoid zapping.

Let's try to keep this list updated

Here are a few you should mute:

Do you have spotted any other one we should mute? Share it below...

A reminder for stackers: to mute specific users, you can go to their account, click in the ... menu and select mute @userneme πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

I went from downzapping, to muting, to unmuting and downzapping at least the most egregious posts once more. Still torn over what the best strategy is for this. Sometimes I test if what I think is a bot by interacting with it (without zaps) but I find that I'm not often wrong at first glance anyway, so that also feels like a waste of time.

High territory comment fee was sort of useless because freebies; all it did was tax the non-sloppy stackers that I maintain the territory for in the first place.

At least if you mute it, you can't accidentally zap it. If we're talking properly optimized for sat extraction bots (which some of these seem to evolve into) then I'd estimate break even at under 100 sats a day. If ran through a sybil net like the ones you describe here (one piece of software can run many nyms) then this would be 100 sats a day across these accounts.

As long as it's profitable, it won't go away.

Accidental zapping carries a big cost here. They don't need many sats, and I know that I have accidentally zapped some of them (downzapping can be tedious when they are posting a lot and I have fumbled it a few times because it takes four clicks).

Perhaps it is time to remove freebies again...

reply
remove freebies

Freebies is technically only detrimental to territory-specific control, but side-wide, as long as there are 1 sat comments, it doesn't make that much difference. There still is a per-territory allowFreebies field in the db, it is just not linked up to the configuration afaict. Maybe that would be a better solution than nuking the feature completely.

There are 5 freebies per account per month, so it is only a real bother for sybil account bots. The cost of a new account is technically the cpu time of generating a nostr key though - i.e. cheap. However, limiting the freebies site-wide is probably too obstructive to new, blank users. Need an entry point somehow.

reply

could we just make it so freebies can be zapped, which can affect their visibility, but they don't earn any sats? (100% of freebie zaps go to rewards)

reply

That destroys the entry point.

How will you make your first sat ever, on SN?

reply

Talk to people on SN and figure out how to get bitcoin and create a lightning wallet.

reply

Right, so goodwill instead of merit. Fine... but then: how do I extract sats from every person that sponsored a bot to post slop that I then had to downzap even more?

reply

no, I didn't mean beg for your first sats. I mean connect your own lightning wallet and use your own bitcoin that you got from somewhere else (or use them to buy CCs)

but the idea is that you can still talk to people here even if you don't know how to do all that. you just won't earn any tips until you actually pay to post

couldn't we do this:

if you zap a post which a number of other stackers then downzap, you lose some ranking in the reward pool

I'm not so good with the permutations of how things have changed, but i think I remember a time when we had something like this dynamic with trust. If trust gets reintroduced, I could see this working. Without trust it would be vulnerable to a sock puppet attack.

Here's a ruleset that might help stop trash from spreading:

  • New accounts only get 2-3 freebie posts.
  • Freebies go into debt for and must repay anything they still owe when creating their 3rd/4th post
  • Freebie posts appear as "Anon" until its debt is paid off
reply

@k00b has interesting thoughts about debt.

I like the idea of freebie posts appearing as "anon" -- even better if the sats zapped to such posts go to the reward pool or territory owner.

Unfortunately, pretty much the only reason freebies exist is to help a user who is not familiar with bitcoin and who doesn't have any lightning sats to get started. It might make more sense just to remove freebies altogether.

It can be even stricter: The first freebie must be paid off (by the new anon or other zappers) before the second freebie is granted.

  • Zappers that pay off other's freebie debt get a bonus from the zap side of the rewards pool.
  • Downzappers whose moderation survives 24h gets a bonus from the downzap side of the rewards pool
reply

Some kind of inclusion of downzapping in reward ranking may be merited.

reply

Some kind of inclusion so you can circulate your own downzap sats? I'm sure that king downzapper from these past few days would appreciate the cashback. To suppress more posts and be a more efficient oligarch.

I say make them pay.

reply

I believe that is why we haven't included downzap in reward ranking thus far, but it means that downzapping is entirely altruistic.

In the case of the recent wave of bots, it'd be nice if there was a way to incentivize hunting them down and downzapping them.

@DarthCoin is always tagging plankers and shitcoiners with memes in their bios. It is indeed useful and fun lol.

How about we start upzapping and downzapping profiles? So downzapped profiles will need to create much better content to be able to rise on the LIT homepage.

reply

New account costs nothing. Doesn't scale.

A really bad, bad idea. Creating debt makes no sense... fiat-minded people love debt and will leverage it as much as they can.

reply
442 sats \ 1 reply \ @Kruw 24 Jul

If you limit that leverage to 1 post, you can terminate the "uncooperative" path in the prisoner's dilemma.

reply

I'm ok with 2-3 freebies, it actually incentivises newbies to experience SN for free and migh give the opportunity to get some sats or ccs. But bringing that into debt, is just too much, and we know from experience debt can only grow and never be paid back.

Bots and user name scams! Is SN growing?

What’s next porn? Crypto scams and the BCash takeover!!

reply

it's ecash, not bcash now. Not sure what happened to c and d variants.

I thought money was the moderator?

LOL

reply

it's an interesting sign that money as the monderator struggles here.

I subscribe to accounts that are obvious bots and downzap them as soon as they post. However, it seems to be the case that they are still showing up in people's feeds in ways that stackers find annoying.

Does this mean money is a bad moderator? it might.

More likely, we haven't figured out how to use it in the way that works best. Open to suggestions.

Easy button: #1531522

Otherwise, freebies should just be disabled entirely. Bad for SN adoption, good for Bitcoin adoption.

Would you mind sharing your list? even via nostr DM if you don't want to share it here.

reply

Yea. I use it to post and boost bots.

reply

is one of the moderation filters, but not enough. Perhaps there are not enough stackers downzapping? Because in the other side anyone is able to boost slop and spam anyway.

reply

What happened to if they pay the fee lol

Just up the cost to post πŸ˜‡

They can pay whatever they want, even boost if they wish. Nothing personal, everyone minds its own business. I just want to mute them all so my feed is clean :)

Filters, filters, filters!!

I'm sure the Core devs and Big Bitcoin is behind this, too

reply

Is the spam coming from CC freebie accounts mostly? To be honest, I am not really noticing them. I don't read every or most posts of course though. Would tweaking the Content filter settings help with this at all?

reply
22 sats \ 1 reply \ @Kruw 24 Jul

There's a noticeable amount, and it's almost always freebies.

reply

Is my Comment 1 sat filter what is stopping me seeing them then? (I feel like that is the default?)

reply

good point, but this may filter out content from stackers I'm interested in reading.

reply

I don't understand why these boys are even here

It's so costly in real money to post. And there are so few people here...
