TLDR
a guy on nostr asked me how to sign txs without a coldcard...

  1. use Tails to generate a new wallet with electrum. OFFLINE
  2. save the seed and xpub in a safe password manager
  3. add the xpub to any "watch only wallet" app: bluewallet, electrum, sparrow, zeus, whatever
  4. use that watch only wallet to deposit sats into your "vault" wallet and check the balance if is needed.
  5. if you really need to move some funds from that vault wallet, open Tails, Electrum, make the tx, sign it and then instead of broadcast, just copy paste the signed tx raw code and paste it into a txt on a USB or whatever.
  6. take that raw txt code signed tx and using an online PC, you can broadcast it using https://mempool.space/tx/push without even need of a node

I just followed your guide to set up Electrum on Tails.
I set up a watch-only wallet and transferred my Coldcard stash to the new Electrum wallet.
Thanks for posting this tip on how to broadcast from an airgapped machine.

just use another USB with a txt file.
Fun fact: that txt can be sent over a SMS to somebody else and broadcast it. Is already signed, nothing personal in there.

I bet until UTXOs the transaction is made of remain unspanded you're able to broadcast it. Even after 20 years

Note: you may want to keep a redundant backup of the seed someplace besides your Tails usb, steel plates work well for this.
