(PSLE 2012) Tell us about a school activity which you have taken part in.

My school has a niche in urban farming. Recently, we even acquired vertical towers and grew xiao bai cai, lettuce and spinach on them.

When these leafy vegetables were ready to be harvested, I was fortunate enough to be involved. It was an eye-opening experience witnessing how the system worked due to the water being pumped upward and then flowing down through the towers due to gravitational force. This allowed for the vegetables to be stacked like HDB flats. I gingerly pulled the vegetables out from the containers because I didn’t want to damage the roots. I then placed the vegetables in plastic bags because my school would donate to a community partner called Food from the Heart.

I felt a great sense of accomplishment because my small contribution helped ensure food security for the less fortunate residents in my neighbourhood. I would harvest vegetables again in a heartbeat.

The vertical-tower angle is the strongest part of this essay — it shows active participation, not passive observation. For the PSLE format, the essay scores when you (1) name the specific activity, (2) describe one concrete moment with sensory detail (the feel of harvesting, the smell of soil), and (3) state what you learned (responsibility, where food comes from). The 'eye-opening' line is the right instinct — just deepen it with one specific surprise you had, e.g. how much space vertical towers save vs ground plots.
