Frequent visits to animal places have helped me put two and two together and made me realise one inconvenient truth. As the temperature of the Earth increases, the percentage of female turtles and crocodiles hatched increases. This might inextricably lead to the decline of certain turtle and crocodile species.

I might just use this insight for my own exam question next year.

I'm not sure that's the right conclusion. Typically, more females to males will get you more babies than the other way around.

except when there are very few males to begin with (or at least according to this BBC article)

I suppose it would be a U-shaped curve.

It still doesn't make sense as a story. These organisms are super ancient. They've mostly existed in far warmer environments than this one.

If something's making them dangerously feminine, it's more likely to be something like agrochemical and pharmaceutical contaminants in the water.

reply

I think so.
if the temperatures are extremely high, more male than female turtles/crocodiles will be born.

you raised a good point about these ancient creatures being able to adapt since prehistoric times!

reply

We're still closer to Ice Age temperatures than global historical normal.
