KD is the worst one I can think of. Maybe other sports have good candidates, though.
- Karl Malone and Gary Payton → Los Angeles Lakers (2003): Two aging legends joined Shaq and Kobe after years of competing against them. They reached the Finals but lost to Detroit.
- Charles Barkley → Houston Rockets (1996): Joined Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler to chase a ring after Houston had already won back-to-back titles.
- Alex Rodriguez → New York Yankees (2004): Left Texas for the already-stacked Yankees, adding another superstar to an organization that regularly assembled baseball’s biggest rosters.
- Neymar → Paris Saint-Germain (2017): Left Barcelona for a massive transfer fee to become the centerpiece of PSG’s superteam project rather than remaining in one of Europe’s established powerhouses.
Malone and Payton were too old to count for this. It was a little sad but they were both passed being able to carry a contender.
I don’t remember thinking much of Barkley’s move. It seems to fit though.
Barkley i remember the chasing ring aura on the move, Malone was really just as a link with past week, he tried until the end to not be in the gloat company
Part of why Barkley feels different is that nobody thinks of those Rockets as a particularly great team.
What KD did would be more like Barkley joining the Bulls in 94.
