I think that approach works better for the target audience than a "let's start with a primer on finite fields."

Also, there's an above average chance the last person trying to "orange pill" them left an impression akin to Charlie in the Pepe Silvia scene. Maybe they're trying to create that distance to reach them.

"We're not going to explain the technical details"  is not really a great start, imo.  Even if I'm not interested in those details, I don't think I'd want to learn from someone who starts by telling me he isn't going to explain them.
