@k00b I noticed fetching all territory feeds went from consistently taking 8+ hours to just 15 minutes (!!)

I thought there was a bug in my code, but then I saw you made some performance improvements in the git history.

Nice job!!

Oh that was you. lol.

If you run into something that slow again, please let me know. It indicates a performance bug. It was nice learning about it sooner rather than later though.

Now that it’s really fast … couldn’t I refresh more often? 👀

I don’t want to impact the site. How can I reliably tell where’s the line?

couldn’t I refresh more often?

It's not that fast yet. If you want to refresh more often, I recommend querying differently than you are. Filtering by territory is relatively slow and if you are grabbing from all territories anyway, you might as well filter on your end.

How can I reliably tell where’s the line?

If you run a query and it consistently takes more than ~100ms (your queries when compounded on each other were taking ~15000ms on average), you are doing something that's high load and ideally:

  1. you should rate limit yourself
  2. let me know so I can make it faster on our end and advise on how to make it faster on your end
  3. repeat

hmmm do you think it's suspicious? or is calle suspicious or annoyed or a different third thing or a mix of a bunch of things ??

reply

Mostly I noted calle's saying that he shouldn't "have to go to stackernews" to find out about things...

But it seems like CLN had a plan for how their announcement would go and it is not going that way.

reply
multilayered strategy

That strategy included:

  1. Teasers on discord
  2. It not leaking
  3. Then disclose to everyone outside of discord

for real?!?

PS: fuck the X maxis. Should not announce on <closed platform> so I have to go to <open platform> to find out. You should put it on <other closed platform> directly. Ostrich much?

I am confused by how Core Lightning approached this disclosure.

But I am more confused* by how calle and the "red team" has been going about things

*confused in the second usage here means: *it really looks like they are just trying to get a bunch of attention for people.

It's easy to criticize from the sidelines, and I don't have the inside picture, so take anything I say below with a grain of salt:

  1. I somewhat understand the embargo. It's literally Google's "proven" strategy on Android. But were you as a user of CLN realizing you were using foss-as-in-Android-not-as-in-Linux?
  2. Any h4x0r with a bot is now statically analyzing CLN. So the embargo is pointless. This is basically the increasingly common sound you hear from groups like kernel-security "why are we even bothering with embargoes if the best thing we can do for a defender having a level playing field is being upfront about bugs?" i.e. we will likely move away from embargoes and into read-the-maillist-or-get-rekt. The thing that does need to change for this is bundling features with security-critical bugfix releases, and "we don't support previous versions" is the devil now. Backports are life-savers.
  3. Red team is doing some good things and bad things. Like all humans? It's good that someone is looking. I do think they have insufficient experience, on both ends of the security research process, to do this properly, based on the endless bragging and comms fuckups. But on the other hand, we may get a lot of pain at once. Cut out the cancers. Which is... 99% of the "ecosystem", especially those that grew fat on Jack / HRF monies. Good riddance.
  4. I think the real thing for @Scoresby & co to be happy about is that SN is delivering some value here and that people are bitching about that. GREAT! Let's make them bitch more often.

decontamination sessions continue...

the worm yield is pretty thick, biofilms are well-hydrated; during hotter drier days they are flat, dry, and more difficult to expell - another reason to continue drinking clean liquids, preferrably filtered & deuterium-depleted (e.g. from naturally grown fruits & vegetables as well as local natural spring water); pro tip - if using higher concentration of salt, bicarbonate & hydrogen peroxide in order to flush the sinuses, have a milder solution ready (just some dilute salt) in order to ease the burn;

My forte is noticing a problem and doing something about it. Recently, I was aghast at how the son seemed to have forgotten many of the words he had learnt the previous semester. Geez, he is only in Primary One. So, I started something new. I took the spare flashcards I had earlier taken from book exchange corners and formed two-character phrases and pasted them in some random book given by Ministry of Social and Family Development. I don’t remember my father setting time aside to revise Chinese characters with me, but there you go. This is a sign of the times, where English dominates many of our everyday interactions and headspace.
