A NASA led study found that some Earth microbes may survive for weeks or even months under certain lunar conditions.
Researchers tested five microbes against simulated lunar environments and found that Aspergillus niger, a common fungus, was especially resilient. Some microbes could potentially survive in shielded areas near the lunar South Pole.
The finding doesn't mean microbes can grow on the Moon only that some may survive there. That could become a serious concern as future lunar missions and bases increase the risk of accidentally transporting Earth life to the Moon.
Isn't colonizing the moon, and thus transplanting our Earth ecosystem life there, sort of the point??
Yeah, colonizing the moon would involve bringing some earth life with us eventually. The concern is more about unintentional contamination before we understand what lunar environments or potential future scientific sites might contain, there's a difference between deliberately introducing life and accidentally spreading microbes everywhere.
I can see the value in studying uncontaminated areas, but once we're trying to establish an ecosystem, I'm all for a spray and pray approach over a highly deliberate designed one.

Why would we want to? There are and always will be plenty of sterile environments in the solar system. What seems to be limited are habitable ones.
Maybe. The tricky part is figuring out which environments are worth preserving before we start changing them don't you think?
I'm not sure if it's particularly tricky. There's a lot of real estate and, outside of highly modified protected environments, there don't seem to be any places where life would easily spread.
My sense is that we can basically just pick a few places to try to colonize, which will require isolation from the outside environment, anyway.
Yeah, that makes sense. We could have specific areas for colonization while keeping others untouched for research might turn out positive.
isn't it the case that our understanding always lag the real-world implementation? Cue every ecological historical instance ever...? oops, we didn't realize... now we know better.
Exactly. That’s why the Moon is probably not the place to repeat that cycle ,we already know how hard it is to undo ecological mistakes.
It doesn’t mean microbes can live or reproduce on the moon but their ability to survive there makes contamination from future missions a real concern.
It’s worth considering, but probably not a major concern by itself. Surviving for a limited time is very different from actually growing or establishing life on the Moon.
