In my view, discussing human relationships is a complex matter because we don't all share the same tastes, values, or upbringing, and we have all grown up in different contexts. Yes, my dad takes a simplistic view of the subject; I suppose that, based on his own perspective and history, he has concluded that heterosexual men and women cannot truly be friends.

Too black and white. If the male is hetero, sexual thoughts may certainly arise with female friends; doesn't mean they ever intend to act on it.
I'd say your father is right to teach caution, but a bit too extreme in how he phrases it.
