I ask this trivial question because, although many people talk about it, an objective answer is never reached. My father, the king of womanizers, taught my sister and me that friendship between men and women doesn't exist, because "men will always want to have sex with you," and things like that. Over time, life experiences have led me to believe that statement is true.
Unlike me, my sister actually believes in friendship between men and women; one of her best friends is a man well, that’s a bit of a long story, but I won’t get into it. My dad always teases her about it, basically telling her that the guy isn't really her friend and that if the chance to get intimate with her ever arose, he wouldn't pass it up. Whenever he can, or whenever he sees a video on social media about male-female friendship that supports his view, he sends it to us. Today, he sent a video like that to a family group chat that includes my dad's daughters, my daughter, and him. The video doesn't contain anything obscene or explicit; it simply reinforces the point I’ve been making here.
My daughter, in her innocence, replied:
"I’ve ended up hanging out with more boys than girls at school; in fact, my best friend is a boy."
I think so. I also think the underlying desire for intimacy can go both ways, although it's more rare in the other direction, because it requires a man to have relatively high sexual worth.
I generally like female friends because the dynamic is familiar - my household had only women in it. On average, most men lack emotional depth, and the ones with fragile egos tend to jockey for position in local hierarchies and are disappointed in me not wanting to participate, which I find annoying. Also, most men don't like it when I tease them which tends to be one of my favorite things to do to people. Women also tend to be way better listeners and more malleable, so it's easier to sync with them rather than letting a dude talk at me nonstop.
To the question, I'd only call a female friend a friend if I wouldn't be intimate with her in whatever context we are friends in - regardless of how desirable I found them to be - and I think that liking the way your friend looks is a bonus if anything. That kind of nuance is lost and probably not available to people without self control though. That said, there's also a large population of people that are cheats and sneaks inherently, so it's best to at least consider the worst occasionally when evaluating male-female relationships.
I sound like I don’t like/have male friends. I do! I really meant on average when I said on average.
yeah and k00b is my friend
I tend to have more fun with male friends. I tend to find female friendships require more of me which is good and less fun at times. And I think it’s relevant to point out that I grew up with brothers only.
That's great; I didn't know they were friends. It's wonderful that she can enjoy a genuine friendship with a man.
I like reading different perspectives; that was part of what I was looking for.
💯 I couldn't have said it better myself.

Only on Stacker News.
It's possible but I think it is rare. I think it is more common as a friend group. Years ago I had a group of friends that I used to hang out in the city with. There were a few women in the group, they either worked with or lived near male friends in my group. One of the women ended up moving a block away from me so we started hanging out occasionally outside of the group to grab a coffee or a drink. We weren't close friends but I would say we were friends.
Sounds like somebody needs a reminder: if a beautiful woman wants to talk to you about bitcoin, you should mute him.
Bots and men posing as women is my biggest fanbase.
Stacker sports is pretty popular with bots made by men posing as women on twitter.
I identify as a bot. 😂
women into sports that is already fishy...
In case you didn't know, this is what @Natalia and I look like
😆😂 or maybe like this, running on the highest model.
My abdomen hurts from laughing so much.
2026 was the year when bots pretended to be human, men posing as women, and women identified as bots. 😂
That's always the safest assumption to make
😂😂😂😂😂😂
If she were to give you a chance or hint that she wanted to get intimate with you, would you accept?
I was single at that time so likely yes but only if I thought it wouldn't mess up our group dynamic because a close friend of mine worked with her. That's how she became part of our friend group.
Thanks for your honestyvhaha, I don't regret asking this on SN; I figured the answer would be "yes." That’s exactly what my father means: "A man will be your friend until you prove otherwise."
Yeah. I think it is possible but not that common.

Please teach your daughter some grammar🤣
"Me he llegado a..."
Si, en eso estamos. Esta aprendiendo
Friendship and respect isn't mutually exclusive with sexuality per se. I can only hope that your best friend is the one you're married to.
Yes, because most of my friends are men, and I've met wonderful people who taught me different things, most of them are men too.
I think learning how to set boundaries is important.
Do you think there’s a possibility that if you hinted to your male friends that you wanted to be intimate, they would go for it?
idk, but I know for sure that I won't hint that. 😅
Hahaha, that’s the dilemma my father always presents us with. Yes, we’ll meet good, intelligent, interesting men we’ll get along with them and think it’s just friendship but if you let your guard down or hint at something more, he’s going to take advantage of it.
Well, if a woman hints at that, it might mean she doesn't want to be friends only? That's different from the question you originally asked.
So, does friendship only survive because of us women?
He could well refuse, assuming the girl only wants something carnal and not sentimental.
Men could definitely refuse too, good men have morals. I know that one of my male friends rejected women who approached him because he got family and he knew his boundary.
That’s beautiful though, of course, that’s a separate issue: a person's values and the respect they show their partner and family. I’ve heard people claim that absolutely all men are unfaithful, but I don’t agree with that; I believe there are men who have principles and are loyal.
This thought builds on the idea that men have no standards, any woman will suffice. I’m bi and I don’t secretly want to bang every single person I know.
But I’d like to twist this the other way around: why is it such a concern? Having a good friendship is already halfway of a healthy marriage, assuming the rest of the stuff works out for both of them, why not?
Why is it frowned upon for women to go out with a known, “good” man rather than diving on the cesspool of dating apps?
I guess people speaking about friendship between men and women never had any real friends (talking through men viewpoint)
that's why they think about friendship in a 'facebook' way.
in that case, yeah, 'friendship' between men and women is possible.
but I would never call it a friendship.
Why?
yes. the friendship can develop to a point where even when you intentionally want to try to have sex, you just can't feel sexual enough to do it. it's like the person has become your brother/sister.
I like your perspective.
Not in the physical realm. But men and women could be friends online (only if the woman remains anonymous).
I've had several very close female friends. It never seemed like a big deal.
Your father is right.
I used to be friends with lots of women. We were friends because the specifics of the moment forced it to be (either I was in a relationship, or they were). But if the specifics had been different (and they had hinted at something more), I'd have (tried to) fuck(ed) each and every one of them. I guess that's not what friends do. But because the specifics were the way they were, I did, and still do, very much appreciate their friendship (for lack of a better word).
That is definitely not what friends do.
Too black and white. If the male is hetero, sexual thoughts may certainly arise with female friends; doesn't mean they ever intend to act on it.
I'd say your father is right to teach caution, but a bit too extreme in how he phrases it.
In my view, discussing human relationships is a complex matter because we don't all share the same tastes, values, or upbringing, and we have all grown up in different contexts. Yes, my dad takes a simplistic view of the subject; I suppose that, based on his own perspective and history, he has concluded that heterosexual men and women cannot truly be friends.
It s a question of attitude, of mindset....?!?
Open the doors of perceptions ?!?
I have mostly always believed that it is quite difficult for men and women to be just friends. we are sexual beings and it's very difficult for that to not color things.
The comments below seem to show that men and women do find friendship possible. I wonder how the answers to this question break down along gender: ie do men generally think such friendships are not possible and women are more likely to think that they are?
What I’ve noticed whenever this question comes up is that the answers are: "Yes, but..."
I think so. But I think platonic friendships are likely to happen when the two of you are elementary or middle school classmates or something. Before puberty kicks in and you start viewing people as romantic interests or not. I have close female friends whom I can go out for coffee or a meal 1-1 because we were former classmates
I think your father’s point might be more valid nowadays now that people have FWBs. So it adds another layer of complication to this age-old question
That statement isn't true; there are cases where the friendship is genuinely platonic for various reasons, and others where a guy approaches a girl as a friend but things move to the next level once they discover they share common ground. I have good female friends, but I don't view them that way—I see them more like a relative or a sister. It’s a pretty complex topic—or so a specialist would say... hahahaha.
Sometimes girls don't hear or ignore to hear when boy screams out loud - "I don't wanna be friends"
Ask an average male: Can a girl and boy just be friends?
Boy: "Depends how pretty the girl is."
So, according to his logic, bissexual people can’t have friends ever? Damn that feels lonely.
Sexuality (and availability) has more to do with it than men and women not being friends. Many gay men have a woman as a best friend, so it is not a universal thing.
I would generally agree that many, if not most, straight men would have sex with a woman friend given the opportunity. “Orbiters”. I have also observed such behaviors, and it does seem a little obvious from the outside of a social group.
Human jealousy is a valid evolutionary trait the developed to protect one’s offspring. There is a reason one would feel uncomfortable having their partner spending a lot of time with available, rival mating partners.
no
I think men and women can absolutely be friends. But... if nothing ever happened between them, it’s probably because the woman didn’t want it to happen. :)
I think men and women can definitely be friends, but there’s one thing I’ve always wondered about. A guy usually doesn’t keep talking to a woman, spending time with her and enjoying long conversations if he finds her completely unattractive. So when a guy says, “She’s just a friend,” the real question is what he actually wants from that relationship. Just friendship? Maybe flirting at some point? Or something else? There are a couple of other possibilities too, but I think you know what I mean without me saying them out loud. 😄
