If you count boosts and downzaps as well as zaps from nostr, there were more than 10 million sats zapped in the last week.

What was the percentage from the top two users? Nostr saw 17.5M over the past month from 3.2k senders.
I'm still not sure it makes sense to compare the two.

reply

if you exclude downzaps and boosts, the combined total across nostr and sn is 3.1 million sats zapped in the last week. I'm using SN's public API, and it is only exposing daily totals, so I don't even have a median number, much less the top 2 users.

It breaks down as 1.3 million from SN and 1.7 million from nostr.

My point in doing this is to demonstrate that there are a lot of zaps across the entire lightning ecosystem.

Here's a question for you:

When I asked the cluborange people what their totals were, they said they had more than 400,000 zaps in the last month. This seems somewhat on the high side to me, considering SN had around 40k and nostr had 50k. How do you think I should talk about these stats?

reply

How to talk about Club Orange or how to talk about Nostr / SN?

reply

Ideally, i'd like to have a way to talk about "total zaps" across all the things that might be said to be places you can zap. Each has kind of quirky ways of using lightning (for instance, I didn't get a very big number for Geyser as far as number of zaps, but number sats for Geyser was pretty big).

I'm not sure what number I should talk about: total zap events, total sats zapped, median zap? zaps per minute? Each one will get skewed towards a particular platform.

For instance, because of the recent boost/downzap stuff, SN has high sat totals this week. Club Orange does this GeoZap thing which I believe accounts for 95% of their zaps, but the zaps are smaller than what you normally see on SN and nostr.

I'd really like to figure out a way to talk about zaps that doesn't favor one platform over the other.

reply

Best measure imo is just total sats flow per zap recipient within a fixed time period.

That's probably the best common denominator and can be defines in all 3 options mentioned.

@Scoresby have you thought on comparing with other non-bitcoin platforms or ecosystems? Unfortunately you will need to convert values to fiat to compare, or better gold.

reply

what sort of platforms are you considering? In my research, I haven't found very many platforms where tipping (what the nocoiners call zapping) is allowed, much less actively occurring. Do you know of any I should be looking at?

It might sounds odd, most go into shitcoins stuff. Steamit.com, that I remember was one of the first ones doing what SN is doing now. It still online and running. Hive.blog is a fork of it using different shitcoin, there are more.

I would distinguish between lightning zaps and database zaps.

reply

I'd rather not get into that. There are a lot of zaps happening via Spark (a big chunk of club orange, primal wallet, and now SN has a built-spark wallet as well as CCs mixed with all the zaps happening.

For me, the point is to show encouraging data about the amount of zaps and value that are occuring -- I know that lots of these may not count as real zaps, but what purpose does segregating the database zaps serve?

reply

If the data doesn't define what it's measuring, I would say it's less interesting.

reply

Club Orange = paid membership app
Nostr = open protocol/database
SN = rewarding forum (?)

It feels (10-1.3) 8.7M have been contributed by a zap war between few users.
Would be this an exception or a new trend?

Club orange seems a small circle, not focused in creating quality content afaik.

Considering SN had around 40k and nostr had 50k. How do you think I should talk about these stats?

Numbers presented this way are more comparable. But again, you are comparing a walledgarden app with an open protocol, that is not only used to create contents but a bunch of other things.
I see Nostr as a database, not an app.

at least 20%, after top 10 everyone else almost got peanuts, not sure why the math this way.

I was asking about contribution, not payouts.

Not sure how are distributed now, but looks there is some competition going on.

reply

It feels like 2-5 downzappers contribute majority of the downzap rewards, including 2-3 active stackers fighting the spams, occasionally with some random boosting.

I'm at 750k down but I cycle rewards and territory boost revs... only 50k of that was funded from sats I worked for.
