nostr, and web of trust offer some solutions for mitigation of bots/spam

We have a web of trust. We had it years before nostr did. We've been experimenting this year with how sats alone fight malignancy so have turned off WoT in many respects.

Nostr is a follow-based network. It seems like a subtle thing but the difference between a follow-based and community/commons-based structure is very significant (see: any nostr community experiment that isn't built on private/curated relays).

nostr doesn't require following, it's signed messages associated with a public key. Sats being associated with the key is also pretty useful to add cost to identity. Thresholds could be set based on how many sats are locked up in an identity.

How does the wot work here?

To be clear, I'm familiar with how nostr works. Nostr's social features, at least the working ones, are premised on following. As I alluded to before, most if not all nostr community experiments that work either use follows, are hosted on private invite-only relays, or are centrally moderated.

Thresholds could be set based on how many sats are locked up in an identity.

Edit: Fidelity bonds like that are interesting in theory. Who holds the sats?

I originally misunderstood and thought you meant how many sats the identity zapped.

How does the wot work here?

It works based on spending patterns. e.g. If I zap something before you do, you trust my zapping marginally more, and other people I trust the zapping of transitively.

the local bitcoiners community is based on payments, you must boost the podcast or zap the npub at least 100 sats to be in the community.

Cool. How does it deal with (or how do you imagine you'll deal with) bots that are willing to spend 100 sats?

we don't have that problem yet, but it's just an example of building a community outside the follow or private relay structures.

Joining the community is more about gaining a more narrow lens for content curation and filtering for trusted market place items. Once in the community all of your long form notes, market items, podcast boosts and events are visible in our content feeds. This helps other community members have confidence that they are finding more legitimate information.

we actually had to filter out stacker news replied because the are posted as long form notes on Nostr. ironically, stacker news is the biggest spam problem we have at local bitcoiners...

My bad. We really need to tune our nostr crossposting stuff.

This is the kind of curation I was alluding to earlier though - which I'd prefer to avoid through some kind of economic mechanism. It's a really gnarly problem and a total schlep to try to solve (which is why I probably sound super jaded).

the Nostr keys are Bitcoin keys so the identity itself holds the sats on chain.

I have 3.7k sats associated with my Nostr identity on chain.

If Nostr is the problem with bots over here, the wot could trust npubs with sats locked up higher than ones without.

I see so it's not a bond but more a proof of reserves thing. That's interesting.
