Reddit has that. I would like to see which posts and comments are being upzapped and downzapped constantly. It is a useful signal to have. It can be content that people are trying to suppress. But it can also be pure nonsense or self-promotion (in which case I would like to see who posts that so that I can mute the authors). Not sure how exactly that should be calculated or what the appropriate 3-letter label to use (CTR?). I think this is the formula that Reddit uses: https://github.com/reddit-archive/reddit/blob/master/r2/r2/lib/db/_sorts.pyx#L60

Reddit has it. Most retarded reason ever.

Muted retarded OP

That would be a pretty neat feature to have. For the most part, I had dodged the downzap game until I posted about the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, and that sucker got just as many downzaps and zaps lol

I think in the case where something receives significant downzaps, this is always the case.

Boosts and downzaps feed off each other, usually becoming a battle between two people that probably has more to do with being dug in against each other as much as whatever the topic of the post was.

I agree! In this instance, though, I didnt boost it at all there was just over 5k in zaps and 5k in down zaps lol

reply

A post can be downzapped here with the same amount or nearly the same if somebody doesn't like it to sit under hot for longer.

It has a manner.

reply

110% agree! It definitely has a great function! I just wish there was an option to look at the most down zapped posts of the day, week, etc.

reply

The posts that certain people really want to bury with downzaps - they're downzapped so early and so much (bots?) that they're not really controversial. They just completely disappear. I stopped posting for a long time on Stacker.news because it felt like shouting into the void.

The posts of mine that get downzapped are almost exclusively the ones that are anti Iran War, or exposing Israel related psyops, assassinations, etc.

Like this one, recently: Flydubai Flight (Dubai to Tel Aviv) attempted attack/hijacking - false flag?. It was downzapped to oblivion, gone. And I'm not interested in spending my sats trying to boost it up again. There's gotta be another way.

Other posts are fine. But yeah, anything that is seen as anti-Zionist is downzapped to disappear. So it's not "controversial" but rather just GONE. (Except for those rare people who who check New instead of the default).

Shitcoin related posts are also downzapped a lot. That, I like. But those are also easy to "mute" completely.

reply

Also - the idea that people will still come onto Stacker.news and continue to write high quality posts, EVEN THOUGH they'll be censored (depending on the topic) is not true.

Certain topics (Israel) are completely censored. People that DO stay on stacker.news will just stop writing about these topics. Maybe there will be a few outliers (like @Solomonsatoshi) but mostly, it won't happen.

It's like conditioning. Hit a dog on the nose with a rolled up newspaper when the dog does something you don't like, and the dog will stop doing that.

Spend hours on an Israel related post, then it immediately gets downzapped so nobody sees it - you stop doing that.

People give up. Either stop writing on that topic, or leave stacker news.

The structure/mechanics of downzapping needs to change.

reply

"Don't touch Israel or you'll be silenced on SN"

It's happened to me too, hahaha

reply

You think everything is a false flag.

reply

Yeah I never see your posts and I see why

reply

Someone does sometimes list the most downzapped posts on stacker saloon but they also frequently omit to do so when there have been posts critical of Israel and the Iran war.

There is at least one person is desperate to suppress any meaningful and informative dialogue on the question of Israel, the Iran war and The Greater Israel Project.

A potential solution -

Restrict total downzapping by any nym to the sum total of zaps ever received by that nym and ban anons from downzapping.

reply

Yeah, there needs to be some way to have downzaps not count in the main feed.

But distinguishing between the downzaps that I WANT to take into account and the ones I don't - that's the hard part.

I'm not sure that ignoring "anon" downzaps is the answer. People will just create fake automated accounts. I've seen a lot of those already.

It's a tricky problem. Here's some ideas:

  • "take downzaps into account" for default feed is turned OFF. Allow people to turn on if they want.
  • Have a "Accept-downzaps-from" list. This would be similar to "follow" or "mute" but it would just take into account whether if the downzapper is on your list, when creating your default feed.

Could/should downzaps AND upzaps be public? Right now, from the point of view of me being censored - I'm thinking YES they should be public. But I'm sure there's also reasons on the other side, for preferring privacy.

reply

Limiting the amount of downzapping anyine can do to the number of (up) zaps they have ever received would limit the ability of people to censor content.

If you have been a contributor of content and been (up) zapped for it that should entitle you to a greater ability to downzap content.

With rights come responsibilities.

Having never contributed any content of any value currently malign actors can come in and censor with no limit.

Downzapping is a valid mechanism but needs limits.

Identifying downzappers would be justified imo but will be blocked on grounds of privacy even though it's only a nym.

It would also require banning downzaps from anons- again a good idea.

Identifying upzaps would also be a good move imo but equally is unlikely to happen due again to the apparent preference to protect the privacy of nyms.

reply

Yeah, but since you can essentially create unlimited accounts, you could just create multiple accounts, and up zap yourself to whatever point you wanted, to fulfill whatever requirement is necessary.

reply

That would be fairly obvious and accrue a 30% tax wouldn't it?

Or can you zap yourself 100%?

reply

I don't know...would it really be that obvious? Upzaps and downzaps are not public now, right?

And a 30% tax...they'd laugh at that. There's millions spent every month on the propaganda purveyors. Content creators are paid insane amounts to downplay what they want to downplay, and vice versa.

I think some kind of reputation based system (like a "Accept downzaps from" list ) is the only way to make this not a completely financial thing. Like - who has the most sats can determine what's on the main feed.

reply

Yes the Zionist downzapper does seem to be very well funded.
We are discovering the potential problems with using money as a moderator- the rich can play on it.
Perhaps all we can do is tax it to some extent (by forcing the use of Sybil downzaps by limiting downzaps to upzaps), identify those downzapping- ie anons cannot downzap, and nyms are identified where they downzap?
We can also already identify the posts that have been downzap censored in the Stacker Saloon.
It seems like there may be no one simple and perfect solution- just ongoing war!

Hover over the sat count and it will show you the breakdown

reply

I fully support this idea, it's the reason why I post a daily recap of the most downzapped post in da saloon.

Here's today one #1590658

This would fit Stacker News really well. A Zap Signal Index (ZSI) showing consistently upzapped/downzapped posts could surface hidden gems, controversial content, or spam. Similar ideas have already been explored around SN’s ranking/signal systems here: #1362477 and #1571285

reply

there are so few comments, you can just scroll to the bottom of "top" to see the controversial takes

A controversial filter could be useful, but I’d rather see it based on actual disagreement in voting/zapping behavior than on keywords. That would make it harder to game.

6 sats \ 0 replies \ @Chikasunbeats 7 Oct -22 sats

Good idea. I get you. I just joined and I noticed some posts disappear even with good points. A controversial filter go help people see them instead of them just vanishing.
CTR label go help us spot posts wey people dey fight over. Support.
