There's no "rejoining." The communists are an illegitimate unconstitutional foreign-backed insurrection. Any reasonable person would prefer to be temporarily vassalized by the US and cycle through the horrors of war than live under permanent communist rule.

The majority decide in a democracy and the majority of Taiwanese are certain to see the future is with rejoining the mainland- in economic terms they already are.

You have to overturn an entire system of government and culture that protects freedom of religion, freedom of speech, property rights, and all the other foundations of civilized society that the PRC seeks to crush through violence.
