I was totally closed off from any blocksize increase at all but changed my mind when I saw it from a lightning perspective. I wonder if other never-forkers would be susceptible to the same framing.

I suspect they might be. I'm not sure their mind will change especially if there are alternatives, but its always worth having these conversations IMO.
Blocksize increases are a hammer and a lot of these problems don't end up being nails in the end - but some problems might indeed be nails.
