Don't be fooled by what you see in the news or in certain books. They are very good at deceiving you with semantics. If you follow the rules, success follows.

Whomever has the bigger gun(s) supersedes any law.  There are many examples of the government using their bigger guns to supersede the law.

I also think situations like this are why the USA government collects so much data on everyone. There is data they have collected that shows you violated a law that they could use to throw you in jail.  If you do something the USA government does not like, they will get that data and throw you in jail.  The book "3 felonies a day" talks more about this idea.
