... what would it be?
For me, I think it would be allowing deletes only within the edit period. I have become a huge fan of "no edits, no deletes".
Allowing people to edit and delete within a certain time period seems like the best compromise between user choice and mirroring the internet more like real life where we also make mistakes but have to acknowledge them. Making mistakes is not the problem. It's the way people deal with their mistakes.
letting anyone create their own subs, and the requiring a small monthly fee to be paid by sub creators.
the sub creators would also earn a portion of all post, comment, boost, and zap fees which would incentivize sub creators to create thriving communities.

Exactly. Let's make SN the new Reddit, but with fair monetization and Bitcoin ethos.

There's a site that has that dynamic, but I don't recall what it is.

interested in checking it out if you happen to remember the name later on

Ugh, I hate the layout...too twitter-ish

Yeah, I didn't get into it either. The model seems promising, though.

Sounds like a lot of the shows I end up watching. Great premise, but bad writing.

Some more subs could be introduced, in addition to "bitcoin" and "nostr".

  • no shitcoining, no bots, no AI shit, just pure good bitcoin content. Nothing else matters.
  • convert SN wallet into a lndhub account
I think in general SN is ok like it is. Much much better than reddit and other BS.
reply
I kinda agree with this. I like SN being Bitcoin-centric...but I wouldn't say no to a general interest sister site.
"Stackit". Just throwing it out there.

A section that gives users the ability to send a nostr event/post
Have Stacker News be an email address as well, like nostrfreaks or nostrplebs
reply
Honestly it just needs more content, very happy with it today but it's not something I can infinitely scroll yet.

For me the most important thing are NON bitcoin talk increasing, like on Nostr. That's how we'll grow in a sane way and don't become some kind of nerd bubble
Any topics, talk about food about war about politics about sports anything you want. Sad thing is 95% of sats go bitcoin related, once it becomes homogeneous will be amazing progress.
reply
That's the tricky part. One the one hand, most of us ended up here bc of Bitcoin, so that's often going to be the largest common interest. On the other hand, this format won't ever gain adoption if we limit it to just Bitcoin stuff.
@koob has said before that he doesn't want to add more subs until there is a substantial amount of posts on other topics. But perhaps we can merely get a thriving "other" category going.
Either way, Bitcoin posts will probably get 95% of the sats for a while.

homogeneous
I think you meant to say "heterogenous" :)

Better approach for handling decay.
Quite often a post or article goes six or eight hours before getting a single upvote, especially those posted at like midnight (American time). But then when the majority of SN users come online, say from 6am to noon, Eastern (U.S.) time, the new posts will get upvoted and the post that never got any upvotes at midnight will never make it to the front page, even though it gets just as much love (upvotes, tips) from those waking up and checking SN, 6am to noon.
So there's essentially a penalty for posting in the late evening, and very early morning hours (Eastern time). I'ld like to see decay modified so as to not penalize these articles that were barely noticed overnight.
reply
Yeah, I consider time zones as well when posting. Good point.

enable downvoting, but you gotta pay double the sats

Perhaps it is worth breaking into subs, such as "news", "articles". Now, although they have made a division by topic, they are still in the same pile and it is more difficult to find good content. Links to resources and articles within SN are jumbled together.
reply
Remove the stupid tldr bot and hn bot. Bots are useless idiots that only create spam.
reply
An "other" tag where people can put content that isn't necessarily bitcoin or nostr related/focused.
reply
Ability to post as anonymous (doesn't show to average user who posted comment), with persistent hash instead of nick per thread (4chan style). Anon posts either shouldn't be able to receive sats, or sats should be handled on SN server side.

A bit more padding, bigger font size, and gentler dark mode colors.
(I'm getting old, and I frequently read in poorly lit places -- you know, the underground market, etc.)

Didn't make it in time for edit, perhaps something like this from a mockup I did a while back:

I'd love a Craigslist sectionals type tab for Bitcoiners to meet up in real life and do P2P transactions & barter.

An events sub.
