Regarding tools I use: I use a combination of lnnodeinsight.com and lndg. My approach is not scientific. Regarding "best" node v. lowest fees, I started by actually trying to earn sats. I read all kinds of advice on how to make the node profitable. I failed miserably, and quickly realized I could earn as much or more sats from fountain (and now Bitcoin Magazine App) than I was from my node. I have now abandoned attempts at profit and focus on low fees and fewer, larger channels. I figure I'm doing my part to help the network, and my node will eventually be profitable as bitcoin price appreciates over the years.
That's just me. I'm interested to hear what other people are doing
Here, hear! I started down the same path as you, trying to make a “profitable” lightning node, and eventually realized it’s not easily achieved.
Now I also just have less but bigger channels and keep my fees low. I also have a private node that has a private channel with my routing node, and all spends from the private node routes thru my routing node.

Good idea re private node. I think I'll do that too.

Yea, not a bad idea for privacy if you have more than one 24/7 machine running. Remember to provide routing hints in your invoice when you’re receiving on your private node though, or else you’ll always get the no route error.

Thanks for the heads up
