Unfortunately, I think it is. It seems the Bitmain machines have much better hashrate per dollar spent and more efficient power usage.
USB miners are a good insurance policy against governments physically attacking large mining operations and thus weakening the network overall, but that doesn't make it profitable and I worry about the scalability of altruism.

Well - it's a bit of a lottery

Those USB miners will get you about 100 GH/s.
A S9 will get you about 15 TH/s/
S19 is 100+ TH/s
The only thing those USB miners are good for are lottery tickets. Collectively, they won't make a dent in the overall hashrate.

I don't think a device is what will decentralize mining. Instead it's more likely a politically-driven attack on large miners that a) causes their equipment to disburse or b) get bricked through PoW change.

USB Miners have recently mined a block, so there's that. A lottery ticket.
Compac F are the best ones in the market, but of course there's no comparison to a normal miner. The good thing is that you can run them quietly or completely noiseless.
There's also the Apollo BTC if you want to play around with this at home, they can be setup to be also very quiet.

Apollo BTC is very expensive given its hashrate.

Absolutely, and it uses older chips.
The main thing about it is that you can run it quietly at home and it looks nice.
It's a niche product, definitely not to get the best hashrate per money. There are way better options for that, but they of course are extremely loud and look too industrial for some people.
