Im going to push back here. What if Twitter is looking for a revenue source to power their servers and pay their programmers to keep the application running?
Are we not supposed to pay for software that we use and find viable?
As someone who works in FOSS and understands first hand how hard it is to monetize something people think should be free should have more consideration about the choices Twitter is making to charge its users for access to his (Musk’s) application.
I think this post falls into the China fallacy that WeChat controls every aspect of life of the common person in China. Most of China is still not developed. Sure those living in cities and connected to the web are forced to deal with WeChat
But how is it different than USA? Citizens are forced to get a bank account and establish a credit history to buy a home. We have credit bureaus that surveil every time you miss a payment and adds to their database and you have no way of stopping them.
I recognize the goal here but people really need to get out of this free for me mentality and be willing to pay for the services you receive.

my concern is the verification - not the payment

can you pay for a blue check in cash?
reply
Lol, can you pay for any SaaS product in cash? Mullvad is the only one I've ever heard that allows this.
reply
Yes you can. Walk to any CVS store and buy $20 prepaid visa in cash then use it online.

I appreciate the concern about blue checks leading to a social credit score. It's a risk to be sure, however...
Elon's doing some anti-establishment things here with the candidates announcing on spaces and while I don't support a social credit score, I support his efforts to take MSM down a notch, to get them all riled up and make them look foolish. As long as he seems to be doing more that and less the scoring I'll keep my subscription. I don't really use Twitter anymore, Nostr's got it going on in a big way, but it's like supporting the insurgency back home that fights against a rotten state.
Again, I have no desire for a social credit score and at this point all they can score is my $8. I'd be wary of a Twitter that gets too tightly integrated into daily life but also don't see it happening given how controversial Elon is. It's great to highlight these tight integrations of WeChat so we can BOLO. Thanks for fighting the good fight. SHSS.

Nostr? Twitter is irrelevant to me now.
Sending money so the richest man in the world and his fellow investors can make good on their investments doesnt ring true to me. Much rather fund bitcoin development.

Meant this as a reply to blockchainb post below

People missing Odell's point. It's not about the money. It's about the encroachment of KYC and that opening the door to social credit score like applications. The whole point of Bitcoin, Nostr, other freedom tech is supposed to be fighting back against centralization of the Internet ushering in a cyberpunk dystopia. The whole dunking on the blue checks is funny but actually it's not really a joke. We've got to stop bending the knee to big tech and big government. Small daily acts of defiance can make a difference. I will not eat the bugs. I will not like in the pod. I will not get the blue check.
Also for sure Musk is no savior. He's a shitcoiner and a egotistical control freak and he only acts up because he thinks he knows the animus of the Internet better than any politician (which he does, to be fair). But he'd love nothing more than everyone KYC'd and chipped and blue checked and driving in a surveillance machine on wheels.

We can still use twitter without the blue check. Is reach really a lot different for free & paid accounts?
reply
Agreed, same here. and if there is a difference I would never know and don't know what I'm mising (if anything). The features you get (longer tweets, NFT pic, etc) ain't worth much to me. I'm using "bird" as just another information source and if I find it valuable I will pay for it, until then I will enjoy "free ride" and to be honest it is not really free anyway, it takes my attention and time and that's a value for me. One can't make up time. Once again, you don't like it? Do not use it, simple as that, at least to me. Can't blame Elon for trying to get paid, it is a business after all. He is more right than he is wrong and that's enough for me to still listen (but not participate) Odell has a different goal than mine and I hear his point but I wouldn't take it too seriously. If Odell starts his own site, I would join and follow since he does have interesting info to share. Look at SN here, I like this model even better than "bird". This model shold be a standard if I had my vote. Peace out....

with rate limiting any concern for the future of twitter seems irrelevant, to me

This post helped me realize the reason WeChat exists in China and nowhere else is because China has incredibly deep regulatory moats that keeps anyone from competing with its largest companies.
To be fair to Elon, I'm pretty sure the future you describe is not what he wants even if its the future he might get.

Well, Zuckerberg tried to add finance to Facebook and was turned down. If Elon tried to add finance, would they let him? Maybe under the current CEO.
Also, speaking of WeChat, here is a video where he says his goal is to "copy wechat"
