- By popular demand, ~tech is now live. This is the most general sub we've created so it'll be interesting to see how it shakes out. Right now it just has all the @hn bot posts in it.
- We added some markdown keyboard shortcuts:
ctrl+kwraps a selection in link markdownctrl+iwraps a selection in italic markdownctrl+bwraps a selection in bold markdown
- There were a bunch of random fixes/enhancements that were also made. Most notably, browser notifications are now double opt-in thanks to the request and guidance of @sime. The other stuff is not really worth listing out.
Nearly all of the work on this release was again done by @ekzyis. So direct your thanks (and complaints lol) at him!
Thanks @ekzyis ! SN just keeps getting better.
I have to admit. I'm still a little hesitant to upvote ~tech stuff because it feels unrelated to everything else.
Because you don't want unrelated stuff to show up on the front page because it's unfamiliar?
Yes ... I think we need logged in folks to be able to opt-out of subs or make most non-consensus ones opt-in.
Yes, I agree. I feel like that goes into the direction of the tag system proposed by @skreep_ (which really resonated with me) since it also goes in the direction of personal feeds.
I have a UI mockup in mind so people can select which subs/tags they want to see. Will see if I can show it to you tomorrow
😠thanks for giving my proposed label/tag system some consideration @ekzyis
I'm glad to hear it resonated with you. I was near ready call off work to start writing out a whitepaper to explain it because I really felt like I was onto something with it haha
it was on my mind for days lol
And I have to admit it's weird that @hn basically has it's own sub now lol
The hot page is basically a "Best of @hn"
Now we're more like Reddit, lol.
Nevertheless, I'm excited to see if this creates an organic influx of users that also care about Bitcoin and its future.
For any new users lurking around, stack responsibly lol.
Right now, Bitcoiners become Stacker News users
Eventually, if all goes right, Stacker News users will become Bitcoiners.
Big difference!
Will be interesting to see the difference of comments between SN and HN.
What is the algorithm for @hn to post posts?
I like the idea of @hn seeding it by e.g. picking the top 3 posts during the day, but then it would be great if folks just post better tech links than HN :)
It just fetches the top story on HN every hour and checks if it was already posted (from any user). If not, it posts it.
So far, it's been hit and miss if stackers like these posts so
sounds like a good idea. Basically posting less but more quality content haha
"less posts, more quality" sounds like a good rule to me :)
I thing having ~tech will open the floodgates, because there's way more articles written about tech than bitcoin.
I think you'll have to start thinking about doing "paid review queues" of some form - e.g. any higher trust stacker news user can work on the "recent" queue and triage the posts (e.g. at most X posts per day). If those posts then do well, the person doing the triage gets portion of sats.
This goes back to my definition of desirables vs undesirables:
This is already somewhat the case because users get rewarded for tipping good content early, no? The current system is just not transparent enough, I think. So something like your idea could help.
Yeah, currently it's opaque. It could be fun to have a place where you can go, do some work and get rewarded sats...
You could then use that for all sorts of tasks that may be needed on SN. Like triaging ads, deciding scam, etc.
Task queues could decentralize that.
We don't want a single person sitting in Keyan's corner office to decide what's good or what's bad for everyone.
Just brainstorming further - I would like to subscribe to someone I trust to do good work triaging and filtering my content - that would definitely be worth my sats.
Please make ~sports and ~health next
Let's see how this goes, but yeah this is the beginning of more subs.
I didn't do that much. But thanks for the shoutout.
Yes my markdown keyboard shortcuts broke custom tipping for some reason haha
Fix is in?
Confirmed
nice
Can you make it work for regular comments? Right now it seems to only work for New Posts.
The markdown formatting? It should work in regular comments
deleted by author
no worries
I just realized I didn't exactly copy the behavior from Github.
On Github, the formatting undoes itself when applied again. However, CTRL+Z still works.
Yeehaw!
