End users currently have no real options for verifying anything without a centralized 3rd party. These 3rd parties get co-opted in one way or another, even if they start out with good intentions. No one is immune to this.
The most promising strategy I have heard would be to decentralize the infrastructure while giving the participants in the decentralized infrastructure incentives to do so via micro payments.
LN seems to be the best candidate for these micro payments, of course.

This is an underappreciated problem. We need a lot more discussion about this. There are opportunities for those who address it well.
