Was a necessity for Lightning and allowed L1 payments with multiple outputs and a block weight scheme where blocks can reach 4MB by storing 3MB of witness data outside the block limit.

I guess I was misguided.
Looking at the huge number of micro transactions I made via Wallet of satoshi made me realise the importance of L2. Otherwise all these transactions would have flooded the base layer.

And no, I don't think segwit was implemented for sidechains.
Mainly was to be able to go forward with scaling bitcoin onchain and LN.
LN could not exist without segwit.
And Bitcoin onchain could not move forward without LN. Must be together.
