rewards changes

The zap-only rewards experiment is over and a new experiment has begun. From today until when this experiment is over, rewards will exclusively go to the top 21% of posts and comments per day.

rewards UX fix

Previously, if you had received several days worth of rewards notifications without getting other notifications, we'd add them together to keep notifications concise. However, when you clicked to view your reward details, it'd only show the details for the latest day.
Now when you click on these compacted rewards notifications it will display all the corresponding days.
Woo! Stalking enabled 😛
reply
Maybe we should rename it to stalking!

Great to see that you've introduced subscriptions.
It'd be great if users could tweak their subscriptions to just 'posts only' notifications.

Good to experiment and see how that changes the site, so I'm all for that.
First impression (not sure if it's already changing behavior or not), but I see lots of posts but mostly nothing that I see zap worthy, and I have less incentive to comb through it all to zap certain things. Since losing my hat streak many months ago and turning off hat notifications, I already didn't bother as much either.
Just food for thought. More posts and comments may be good. Just way harder for me to shift through "recent" and I was a "recent" maxi for the most part throughout the day.

Thanks for sharing!
I totally agree. I slog through recent most days too. The suck is what motivated me to experiment with rewarding it.
It's pretty clear now that upzapping needs to be incentivized. Many more folks began participating in zapping.
We're hoping to figure out if post/comment quality increases in a similar fashion or has some unknown effect.

Yeah I'm curious as well. Let those posting more, but low quality, filter out when they don't get rewards or zaps and then the ones that do good keep it up. Would love that to happen, just needs enough time for user behavior to catch up. Would be curious of your thoughts on that later in the future after all of this.
reply
The lag time of behavior changing is something we're also keeping an eye on. It definitely isn't immediate.
I'll be sure to summarize the results of all these experiments at some point.

Woohoo! Now here's a question - what would be the best feature to remove from Stacker News?
reply
I tend to think in terms of features we can't live without:
  • posting
  • commenting
  • zapping
  • rewards
  • notifications for the above
  • search
  • profiles
  • at least the hot algo (aka zaprank) and recent
Everything else is extra
reply
Nice! And out of everything else what would be the main candidate for removal?
reply
The job board.

man, it took me way too long to figure this out. like i was going to put a bug report on github, but then i lost confidence in my math and ability to post stuff to a github project

Please report bugs even with zero confidence!

I'm unsure, I think you may see an uptick of spray and pray posts hoping something sticks. The rewards for rewarding was nice, I don't have a lot to say often, but it was nice to get a little something something back for rewarding other people.
reply
We know. Eventually everything valuable will be rewarded. These kinds of experiments are helping us understand which things are more sensitive to rewards so we can determine THE Reward system
reply
For sure, you guys gotta go through bit by bit to optimise the system. I am grateful for your work.
Combatting spray and pray shit posts will always be a difficult task. But I think that sits outside the scope of the rewards experiments.
reply
Yeah, I'm worried this is taking out the lower rungs of the Stacker News journey to some extent.
reply
It likely will. We'll be tweaking it though.

Joyful community. I'm comfortable here

It is good to see that SN is going one step forward.

Not sure if this is the best place to report this or the github page: When I click the little profile guy in the top right, statistics is spelled incorrectly as satistics.
reply
Is it spelled incorrectly though? 😉
reply
Ha! I see what you did there. I'd definitely leave it. That's what I get for reading stacker.news so late for me.
reply
I liked the new grammar. Lol
reply
The quality of the work you do to run this platform is exceptional. Keep it up!
reply
Oh neat.. was wondering why my sats balance kept growing so quickly when all I do is upvote stuff...
reply
All changes to improve are welcome 👌
reply
If anyone can explain this, I would greatly appreciate it.
I have two comments, both goth zaps but the one with the least amount of sats got daily rewards. Shouldn't the comment with more sats also get something from the daily rewards?

It was fun while it lasted.
