This is a thread for random discussions that gets posted everyday at 5am central.
Tell us what you're doing today, ask questions, or vent about your life. Whatever you want, let it rip!
I signed up here just now. What are free comments and do I have to pay for comments after that?
reply
Free comments don't cost any sats to post. You can reply to a post 1 time for free, after that it's 10 sats to post.
Daily, the sats accumulated (or at least some of them) are redistributed among users. At this point, I've accumulated something like 1000 sats by making posts or getting the daily airdrop of accumulated sats (from user submissions).
I've never cashed out.
I was initially not sure about whether I would like it, or if the community would respond ideally, but at this point i think it's a great incentive to make good comments.
Welcome... enjoy yourself... and please bring us good content... preferably stuff I can read, because i'm not a huge fan of watching the tubes all day.

I like the idea that your actions should cost something, even a single sat. It's better for the internet overall and with bitcoin this process is stupidly easy

Free comments are free. Free posts are free. After that it’s 1 sat to comment and 1 sat to post.
Also I agree on preferring reading. Not sure why folks upvote so many 3 hour podcasts.

Okay ... P75 latency is around 200ms now which is about a 50% improvement. I just need to get it to 100ms and I'll be happy and can move on.
reply
What is P75?
reply
75th percentile. 25% of the latency is 200ms or worse basically.
reply
Yes 😂

Sorry idk wtf this message was. Pretty sure I butt dialed this response and my phone made autocorrection
reply
Well your butt earned you some sats. And I think that’s pretty impressive!

Here, have some sats - courtesy of my ass

I was wondering if there was a bug or something lol

What is stopping a node operator from not forwarding a payment to the next node in the route?
Could someone change their code to become a bad actor?
reply
Nothing is. The payment would be stuck.
This is a problem with invoices which are risky to retry due to potential loss of funds. But LND automatically prefers nodes less that fail or make payments get stuck.
reply
In a bad actor sits at the only cross road to split the network in halves (theoretically, this is unrealistic in practice due to internet) that is called an "eclipse attack". In Bitcoin both sides will know that because the Hashrate would seem unrealistic for both sides.
Also, the Bitcoin gossip network fulfills the "Continuous Byzantine Agreement". If everyone signs the message that they forward - malicious actors cannot fake messages. This so called "Dolev Strong Protocol". This makes malicious actors easy to identify and ignore. Honest actors establish p2p channels only with other honest actors.
reply
Sorry, I was referring to lightning node operators. They see each payment routing through their node in real time.
reply
A specific payment I think is hard to do it, or even impossible. You can disable a channel if you want. But that will be dumb and useless.

If we ever have personalized view of the main SN list, it would be cool to be able to see someone elses perspective. Imo that could be a first class feature that also helps with discovering good content.
Going further, maybe it also provides a way for people to curate the personalized best news.
reply
Personalized feeds are a big big feature and hard to implement. Rather for the far futer is my guess. But for sure a cool feature idea to keep in mind.
reply
There are some aspects of personalization that may be easier... E.g. seeing posts that are in my selected languages.
