Can someone ELI5 (explain like I'm 5...or maybe 10) about why Simplex is a good idea? It's been mentioned a lot here, and I'd like to learn about it, but I have a lot of topics I need to learn about, and I also wanted to try out the "bounty" feature, so here we are. Basically, I'm interested in - why should I use it, why is it better than telegram/signal, how much hassle is it to get set up.

You should use SimpleX for private and safe communication between users and devices
It is extremely easy to set up - just install, pick a username, and pick your notification frequency
Unlike telegram / signal:
  • You can run on your own servers
  • You can compile the source code and use the resulting application
  • You do not have to rent a number from a mobile phone company
  • You are not linked between applications (eg the mobile number)
  • You are not linked between in-app conversations (NO USER IDENTIFIERS)
  • You are not being tracked (eg through metadata or MITM attacks)
SimpleX has voice / video calls, a desktop app, has very fast transfer capability for large files, is 100% open source, and now includes open channels for topic discussions.

Just to avoid confusion: talking here about Simplex Chat, not Simplex (.com), the fiat/crypto exchange solution.

First time hearing about Simplex chat

It's like ephemeral keys in nostr, so less appealing in that regard.
You also have to trust the server not to leak metadata, same problem as nostr.
The new nip44 makes more sense than an entirely parallel network with the same flaws.
reply
How is it like ephemeral keys? The whole point is that no single key is used across conversations.
reply
That's literally the meaning of ephemeral keys.

So...you're saying that Simplex Chat is an entirely parallel network, but with the same flaw as ephemeral keys in nostr (must trust the server not to leak metadata)? Not that I understand ephemeral keys in nostr, just wanted to clarify that you're not a Simplex chat fan.

Pretty sure this is an AI response

You own your identity, like you do with nostr, and no entity or company does. You can create a new key for each new person or device you communicate with.

I made accounts with SimpleX Chat for some of my family members who lives in a highly censored country and mainstream social media and chat apps are at risk of being banned.
