Howdy, stackers!
Today we're hosting our first ever public call + roundtable to discuss all the latest developments and plans for Stacker News starting at 11am ET.
Today's hybrid format will feature a live (and recorded) Vida call with @k00b, @ekzyis, and @kr to cover 4 high-level topics:
  • What was shipped in Q3 2023
  • What was adoption like in Q3 2023
  • What is planned for Q4 2023
  • How stackers can help out
After the call, we'll transition to a roundtable discussion right on this thread for anyone to bring up questions, suggest new ideas, or give feedback on anything related to Stacker News. Feel free to share any questions here in the meantime, and they'll either be answered on the 11am ET call, or directly on Stacker News afterwards.
Adding Nostr Wallet Connect to the Stacker News wallet would be cool.
Send and receive nostr zaps from SN, pairs nicely with the crossposting addition.

really excited about the new incentives and use cases that will come with user-generated subs.
also can’t wait for @grayruby to get his sports sub!
reply
Careful what you wish for. Sports sub might turn into all day every day Leafs bashing!

I also liked this message in the vida.live chat from @TheWildHustle:
A lot of people on nostr are asking for an easy way to create communities, user generated subs seem pretty game changing IMO. I'd create a community and wouldnt mind paying SN a monthly fee for it. Seems like a better version of blogstack.io habla.news etc.
I wasn't aware of this problem on nostr, so thanks for that! I just know that NIP-72 exists. Is it not working well or just not implemented well enough yet?
reply
I've only seen them in nostrudel, and they leave alot to be desired.
SN could make a sub called "Community Subs"
In Community Subs would be a list of user generated subs like
"Darthcoin Citadel Temple" "Thriller SOF" "3d Printing for the plebs"
with functionality for the Community leader/leaders to moderate content pay sats to post paid subscribers
It would be wild to create an NPUB for the sub, and crosspost alot of the content to nostr, like some sort of blog with community driven posts.

If we want to have new community owners bringing across their user base to Nostr, I also hope we see private communities. That will help us eat into the substack model, without the flaws of centralisation.
I know a lot of people dislike gated content, but it allows you to filter out a lot of the spam/ low-quality contributions & content.
Again, creators would pay a tidy fee for that privilege, and continue to monetise their communities.

When i finally finished working on my prediction market idea (still WIP, I am bad at finding time for it), I would love to see a prediction market sub.
Like the image board sub where you can only post images but just for prediction markets

This Vida live solution looks awesome. Can’t wait to see it in action.
Kudos to @lylepratt and team
reply
Really slick overall. Super intuitive.

Ouh wow, just realized that I can see the recording right in my profile.
So if you go to https://vida.live/room/MM17CIZil now, you immediately get shown the recording including chat. Very cool. No need to post another link.
reply
Yeah, was very cool to try it out and worked great even though the first room didn't work (blank black screen). But we just created another room and then it worked immediately :)
Here is some feedback about features that I felt were missing:
  • react to messages with emojis in the chat, like a quick thumbs up or something
  • "raising hands" feature since I suck at speaking up when I want to say something haha. I feel like I always miss the right time
reply
it looks like the blank screen was a bug i caused when creating the stacker news profile on vida (vida is working on a fix).
basically my username was generated from my email login method, and i scheduled the call with that placeholder username before i updated it to “Stacker News”.
once i updated my username, i was no longer the host of that scheduled event.

Ahh, makes sense! It's hard to get all the edge cases down.
This reminded me of this joke:
A software tester walks into a bar. He orders a beer. Orders 0 beers. Orders 99999999999 beers. Orders a lizard. Orders -1 beers. Orders a ueicbksjdhd. First real customer walks in, orders a beer and then asks where the bathroom is. The bar explodes.

If you're looking for suggestions - I would really love having some kind of advanced search. It would allow for searches like: searching for a phrase (seems impossible now, I tried by using quotes, which often works) search for post/comment in a specific time period searching for x without y (like the "none of these words" search on google advanced search) searching without a search phrase - i.e., just show the results, ORDERED the way I want (for instance, sats) for the time period.
I've had a hard time finding posts that I know were there, I just couldn't figure out the right things to search for.
reply
Those are excellent suggestions!
Would you mind giving specific examples of each of these instances? It'd help A TON. (Plus some of them you might be able to do already but we just haven't made it clear.)
reply
One more search-related change that might be a good idea to consider.
I definitely would prefer a search with a default order of RECENT and not ZAPRANK. Probably because I'm usually searching for a recent post, that didn't necessarily get a lot of zaps.
A couple times I was confused to not see a post that I know I had seen recently. And it was because it was ordered by zaprank, which might be digging way back in history to find something that happens to have the same keyword I was looking for.
Just a thought. Thanks for considering these!
reply
Sure. I can't aways remember the specific thing I was trying to search for but something along these lines
  • phrase search - for instance, say I was searching for an article that had the exact phrase "seedsigner vs ledger". I know I saw it. Can't find it now, can't search for this as an exact phrase.
  • date range search - I posted something with a different login. I know WHEN I posted it, but don't have my login anymore. If I could search on a date range, I could find it, just by looking at everything in that date range
  • negative search - I wanted to do a search for.... okay I can't remember exactly what I was searching for, but I was trying to search for a word that has 2 meanings, I only wanted one of those meanings, so I would have liked to "subtract" out the unwanted meaning**. It's the "none of these words" search on google (https://www.google.com/advanced_search)
  • ordering only, no search - recently I wanted to just poke around and see what, over time, had the highest ranking (sats, zapranks, etc). Not really a search, but just an ordering of EVERYTHING, by sats. I ended up just throwing the word "bitcoin" in the search box, just to be able to run the search. But I really wanted to see everything in the order I wanted, not just bitcoin-related posts.
Another thought - what about searching in the title only, not the whole content?
In terms of priorities - for me the priority would be a phrase search. I use that all the time in other search engines, it's really handy.

I’m excited to listen in!

me checking 11am ET to my time zone, could we use block time next time? 🤓
reply
Haha, I had the same problem. I asked a few hours before to make sure if we're meeting in exactly X hours

It would be cool to enhance the SNL live banner on SN to drive traffic to these live video calls next time!

This is the updated vida link:

I have a suggestions :

Start implementing custom subs by creating some primary subs and choose some users from sn to have admin previlage (eg: @grayruby > sport sub ...)
This will give statistics of how user generated sub will perform and you can experiment with this by time (sub with many admin, sub subs..) until we reach the best implementaion
reply
My plan is to give anyone the power to create subs but something like this isn't a bad backup plan. I don't anticipate needing a backup plan though.

Can you post here when we know the feed is live? I'm just looking at a blank screen right now
btw, I missed to mention this when I talked about it on vida.live but NIP-44 is really very close to getting merged. I just mentioned we're just waiting for a security audit but not when it will be done. Should be done by end of November:
The auditors have time slot in the second half of November.
It would take 10 working days, which corresponds to 12500EUR. The auditor accepts BTC.
For the people who weren't in the stream: We want to use NIP-44 for direct messages on SN.
reply
FYI, the lag is making the stream unusable for me :/
reply
That sucks. We might try to stream to youtube next time in addition to vida
reply
It's better on my phone compared to my laptop. I am able to listen in on my phone pretty well. Not sure why
reply
Mhh, there was no lag for me. Or what you mention as "lag" was what I thought was just the internet connection of @kr and @kk
reply
Yea I think it was just bad connection. Lots of dropped packets I believe.
reply
Made me think if we will be able to run AI on the receiving side at some point to reconstruct what the person wanted to say, lol
